Howard Johnson Grand Forks, ND – Grand Forks

This hotel is an older hotel that has been mostly modernized. The rooms were clean and updated, but sections of the carpet in the halls and lobby were still 1970s era. They were clean, just not overly attractive. The pool area is great for smaller kids as the "deep" pool is 3.5' at the deepest. The water slide is alright and the splash park is decent. […] We found the free continental breakfast to be worth "free', but maybe we're just too picky. The location at the north end of Grand Forks puts it a few minutes drive from everything. The price was good and so we were very pleased with what we got. Lesa meira

Stayed here because of wedding reception on site. The rooms were comfortable and updated. The structural materials were eroding and the drapes needed maintenance. The decrepit outside appearance gives false impression of indoor appearance. The breakfast was not good. Indoor water park is probably good for kids.

Our stay was good. But the breakfast was a let down. The dinner area was so cold you froze before you finished eating.

It was nothing special, there were no microwave and fridge in the room. The beds were very very firm. The kids were dissappointed that the slide closed at 9 and did not open until late afternoon, they did not get to use it. The pool was freezing cold and the hot tub just warm. for the price i paid for the room i dont want to complain.....but there is much to complain about. there was cigrette butts found on the floor by my 4yr old. there was no fridge, the bathtub could have had a wee bit of a better cleaning job. in fact same as the table that was inbetween the beds. the splash park was a great benefit but spa tub was chilly. […] if price is what i paid i will stay again....because very affordable Lesa meira

For the cheap rate and services received it was unbelievable. However, parking lot needs to be repaired, hallway carpet needs shampooing, & strict no smoking policy at the main entrance should be implemented. Overall, we will recommend this hotel to others. Thank you.

The hotel is in need of some serious TLC. Everything is run down. The carpets are soiled -paint is peeling - and I don't have words for the conditions of the bedspreads. The only positives were that the bed linens were clean and the staff is quite nice. Not their fault that the hotel is in that condition. Although I would suggest that the cleaning staff […] actually consider laundering the bedspreads. We had an outward facing room i.e. not pool side - perhaps pool side rooms are better? Beds were extremely hard, room very "dated". no fride or microwave in our room, but was inthe rooms beside us. door to outside had no weather stripping and wa a big draft coming in. pool heater broke on our 2nd day, kids were too cold to swim (whle point of gongto hotel was to swim)

The Good: Lobby was clean. Free internet in lobby. Staff apart from Manager was helpful. Free breakfast was big time and money saver and was pretty good. Very reasonable room rate. Bathroom in room was clean. Shower in room was good, hot, lots of pressure. The Bad: Got a room with one King bed despite checking in early and paying for two queen beds […] (which was noted on my Hotels.com receipt). Pool was cold. Hot tub was cold. Pool area smelled bad. Pool was 3' deep and could not see the bottom. No towels in pool area on 2nd day of our stay. "Lifeguard" at pool was constantly on phone and did not look at the pool with lots of kids in it (on our first day, the 2nd day was much better). Hotel in general was run down and not in good condition. Room temp varied from cool to very hot. No fridge/microwave in room. Had several places in room where the drywall was either rotted underneath or just not done right and had wall paper just patched over. Not a sightly thing to see at first glance. The Ugly: Had to move the foldout couch about 6" to make room for the cot which was needed due to not getting the right number of beds. NOT clean underneath. Did not give me the warm fuzzies about the cleanliness of the rest of the room. Bottom Line: Cannot complain too much considering the price I paid for the room. If they would clean the place and update a little bit it would be well worth it. Kids had a blast and the pool was perfect for them. The hotel was ok. Price was good but 2nd floor where pets are allowed was smelly / musty. Continental breakfast was decent and the shuttle to and from the Airport was very handy. Overall it was a decent place to stay.

Pros: Great location, great swim area for the kids, price Cons: Room reeked of smoke (had to wash our clean clothes when we got home bc of smell), spotty wifi service

Upon arriving in our hotel room, we were very disappointed with the view out of the window - just a view out into the hall - could not see outside at all. We were unable to change rooms as the hotel was booked. As well, the room was so musty that we had to buy our own air freshener. In addition, when we needed a maintenance person to come to fix an […] urgent request in our room (locked out of our bathroom), the person did not show up after we waited for one hour (the front desk personnel did make the request but we found it was an unreasonable time to wait). We left our room for the evening and the bathroom door was opened while we were gone. The staff at the hotel were friendly and the food was pretty good at the continental breakfast. This hotel is in dire need of quality repos. Staff was non-attentive to al needs. People were smoking in their rooms, as we got smoke smell from the filthy vents in our room. The pool and so called "spa" we're lukewarm. Our room smelled moldy and musty. hair dryer in room almost caught fire and no coffee pot in room. The morning continental breakfast […] was awful! Line-up was at least 20 people. Breakfast staff was handling food and garbage without washing hands. Totally disgusting experience! Do not stay there, spend the extra money to get a decent hotel. I was not satisfied at all with this Hotel....There was a odor to the room that was probably the mold that was on the wall....the mattresses were the worst ever must have been as old as the Hotel....the pool was very cold and come the evening it was very cloudy....I would never stay there again no matter the price of the room...

Hotel was not as bad as reveiws had made it seem. Decent pool area and rooms were in good condition. The building itself could use some updates and maintenance.

Hotel was good once we were able to get into our room. Front office manager really needs to smile under cover boss would not be happy with how she handle the clients.

We went to the Howard Johnson for an Elton John concert. We got to the hotel at 5 and there was a line of about 10 people. We waited to get checked in but they only had one person on staff. We went to stay with our 6 year old grandson for an evening of what we hoped would be fun. The children's water pool area wasn't working - no heat. The game room only 3 of the 11 games were in working order. The next morning the hot tub and water slide were not working either - no heat. Not happy when I called and said they were booked. Called hotels.com and found me two rooms at this hotel.

We booked here because it was close to the airport and provided a shuttle service, to and from the airport. Our first room had exterior access, problem number one. It was winter and very cold on the room, it had a nasty odor too. Carpets in the entire complex are in desperate need of replacing. We requested a room change which they accommodated. Next […] room was ok but in Need of a major face lift. Breakfast was not too bad but they serve it in the dinning room which is a lounge in the evening and it smells like a bar the next morning, kind of rude. Staff there are hit and miss, some are helpful others were just down right rude and ignorant. When we returned from our trip and were waiting at the airport for the shuttle they failed to tell us the vehicle picking us up was not a hotel shuttle can but a 21 person shuttle can. When it left because we didn't know that was for us and we didn't approach them, it took over an hour for it to return to pick us up. When I called to enquire about the status of the shuttle the female employee I spoke with was rude, impolite, and seemed like I inconvenienced her by calling. I guess she didn't know my family and I had been up for seven hours traveling and it was only 10 am. I would recommend staying elsewhere while visiting G.F. Lesa meira

Overall, this hotel was perfect for my boyfriend and myself to get away for a night to do some shopping down in the states. It was away from the shopping area which was nice it was a lot quieter and near UND. The hotel seemed to have a bit of renovations going on and we are looking forward to coming back to Grand Forks and staying at the Howard Johnson […] again. I had to ask everyday for my room to be cleaned; they claimed my "do not disturb" sign was on the door, though I had taken it off everyday and placed it in my room, so I (while another employee sleeping on the lobby couch), she claimed someone must be pulling a prank, and did nothing but offer me more soap and towels. Anytime I called the front desk, […] no one answered, because, as I found out when having to physically walk to the front desk, they were all "hanging out" in a back room. The stay was very nice, my 8 year old really enjoyed the pool, the perfect size for him. Lots of fun, very good breakfast.

Hotel Room - door lock malfunctioned - almost left the room with the door not locked. The second door that lead to the outside barely closed let a lone locked. Severe ice build up on the door because it leaked. the room needs some TLC - loose tile, trim damage from mold and wall paper seems bulging are easy fixes. Took staff 4 attempts to get us into our room using the direct door to outside. Hotel offers a shuttle service to the local airport. Shuttle was busy. Staff called a cab as replacement then tried stiffing us with the cost. Used shuttle van upon return. Interior of van absolutely filthy. Appeared to never having been cleaned. Well for the comfort of the room it was very cold. We had a room that had an outside door and there was frost built up on it and it took a long time for the room to warm up. Another reason we stayed there cause they had a kids pool and slides. Well the big slide was down for repair and the pools were ice cold, even the hot tub wasn't warm!! This is a good place to pass out, and that's about it. Front Desk Staff was friendly, bar service was TERRIBLE. They would not serve us, or anyone for that matter. Had to wait in line at the bar to order a round. Which about 15 minutes. There were literally 10 people im the bar. The have next morning, at the Continental Breakfast, the cleaning lady […] made sure we knew we were not welcome. She slammed anything she could get her hands on, and huffed & puffed. This hotel was perfect for us. Great location. Management went out of their way to get us to the airport on time - even though it was Christmas Day!

The stay was good enough. The bed was comfy and the bathroom was clean. The curtains were torn in my room though. Also, there was VERY loud construction going on on the roof at 7:30 am. It woke up my baby and I had only went to bed at 5 am because of black friday shopping. The breakfast was cold and not the best and the pool was closed. 2 things they need to work on...the continental breakfast seating and line ups...was wayyyyy better by the pool where it used to be ...and invest in some new wndows for those outside rooms...quite a draft if you have the bed by the door !!!!!

Clean rooms, friendly staff. Ate once at the restaurant -- food was reasonably priced & generous servings. The rooms are a bit worn but clean & comfortable. Wi-fi internet in the room was hit & miss but they have 2 computers in the lobby for guests. I would stay there again.

good clean rooms, service was on par, just off the highway, pool was good for the kids and the hot tub was good for the adults.

for the price and the quality of the hotel this was an awesome place there continental breakfast even had cooked eggs ham sausage and hard boiled eggs chocolate milk it was awesome more then what you get anywhere else, we had to book a different hotel for the next day as we messed up our booking our fault and the hotel was twice as much and a piece […] of crap it was the days inn DO NOT GO THERE lol this is a must stay and we will be back again and again Lesa meira

Ok all the reviews in here who say that it is great are either working for the hotel, lying or have low standards :( thank god it was only one night !!! I just wish I knew beforehand how bad it was NEVER again......The room was so gross I mostly wore shoes because of that...it smelled of smoke and chlorine very dark and uninviting . I can not express […] how brutal the bathroom was 1) water was not hot ever 2) water would not drain so I showered in about 4 inches of water ewww!! 3) the actual shower hear had a make shift attatchment that basically SHOT at the wall very strange set up OH and it was filthy . The breakfast was terrible as well pancake pucks and rubber eggs bleck.. no waffle maker but had bagels toast and cereal coffee and juices. The breakfast server had the personality of wallpaper no smile no eye contact just blah. Now the pool ....I would be embaressed if i owned that hotel the pool structure and other areas were rusty and very dirty the yellow stain covering the entire liner in the hot tub was such a turn off!!! That is clearly there because they do not clean it properly & I managed to stay in it for 5 minutes then i just could not stand looking at the grime everywhere. Would not recommend this hotel. No hot water all weekend. Suppose to be a smoke free hotel...yet rooms smelled like smoke and they really didn't want to do anything about it. Gave us a bottle of frebreeze...which held a couple of squirts. The continental breakfast was egg, sausauge, cheese on an english muffin. You had to toast the muffin.....but there […] was 1 four slice toaster with the knobs missing for everyone to use! People just gave up. The lady working the breakfast wanted to keep everyone in one small area so she wouldn't turn on the lights in the rest of the restaurant...even though that area was almost full of people. This hotel was very affordable and very clean and quiet for sleeping. The pool is very good for small children. We have to return to Grand Forks in 3 weeks and we have already booked our room here.

how I have stayed at the howard johnson before but this time it was terrible. there was no hot water the entire week-end. what a terrible experenience. it really wrecks your mini vacation. and to make things worse the manger was not available the entire time to voice our complaints.

Stayed for one night with the wife. Enjoyed the Hot tub, lounge, and breakfast. The place needs some work but was well worth the money. Do not believe all of the bad reviews. Not the greatest place on earth, but we were in North Dakota.

Bed very comfortable, clean, quiet room. However, t.v. could be updated. Could not get remote control to work and it turns out the sensor wasn't visible, so could not change channels. Had to get maintenance up to check. But they were very prompt, gave us courteous service.
