great value for money. The room was spacious but the furniture are a little worn. it was not located in the city cbd but the walk into the city was ok and the tram stop is just outside the hotel. the hotel bar was quite relaxing, it was specials on everyday. the staff was friendly and very knowledgeable

Not happy. Arrived after international flight to endure major renovation jackhammers that continued until 6.30 pm. Then rest of night had to endure noisy elevator. The bathroom was not clean with dirt on walls and shower grout very mould stained. The car park ( for which an additional charge of $25 was added) was a nightmare to park in as area and spaces […] were small making it near impossible to manoevre into spaces. The hotel was within walking distance of Lygon St and the CBD. The staff were very friendly. The room was nice enough with a lovely view but very small especially with a king bed. The bathroom left a lot to be desired however. The grout between the tiles on the floor and in the shower looked filthy. The shutter doors didn't close properly and the lighting […] was very poor. Our stay started off great! We arrived at the hotel at 10.30am and could check in straight away. Unfortunately, it went downhill from there. The sheets were dirty! There was make up and stains and it looked as though the sheets were taken off and the bed re-made to hide the offending marks. There was even blood on the bed cover! We informed reception […] of what we thought was an error, not that they cared, in fact they were quite indifferent. The sheet was changed, but the pillows and blood stained cover remained, twice! After our complaint, both our room key cards stopped working. There was what seemed like a nightclub above our room, toiletries, coffees etc, were not replenished and towels were ripped. A real shame as the location was perfect. I hope they lift their game as there are so many other hotels offering great deals with great service. Rydges: discount room=discount service. Lesa meira

The room was not quite as expected (Queen bed rather than the stated King and no park view) but it was larger than usual and had a spa. Well located to University of Melbourne. Decor getting a little tired but all functional. I got the room for half the standard rate and that felt like good value for money. I will definitely stay again if I can get a good rate. Not worth full price though.

The few things I look for in a hotel room are cleanliness, quiet and location. We stayed at Ridges for four nights in August 2012 and it ticked each of the boxes. We stayed with two other couples and all of our rooms were spotless but two of our rooms were not recently refurbished - probably last renovated in the 1990's. The other room was recently […] renovated and looked beautiful. It seemed to be luck of the draw to get the recently renovated rooms as all our rooms were on the same floor and close togther. Location wise - this hotel is close to Lygon St (food) and a short tram ride away from the CBD (food, shops and a railway station). Would definately stay at this hotel again! Lesa meira

After being let down by the standards of other local hotels the Rydges on Swanston was closer to what we would expect when paying for a low to mid range budget. We got a great deal last minute through Expedia when hotel rooms were at a premium and our stay was made more enjoyable by this lovely hotel. Great value.

As visitors to Melbourne, we were so excited to stay close to everything. We arrived after flying from Hong Kong for 9 hours. All we wanted to do was shower and go to sleep. The tiles in the shower were cracked and I couldn't get enough water pressure to wash my hair. The pillows were plentiful, but rock hard, as was the bed. Overall, had a bit of a shabby air to it.

First rate accommodation at a reasonable price. The Hotel is clean; comfortable, with all amenities and friendly approachable staff. Excellent breakfast included. Close to galleries, restaurants and the State Library; within walking distance of CBD, Federation Square, The Yarra River and Flinders St Station. Highly recommended.

Fantastic position, easy to get everywhere including City & Lygon Street cafes. The hotel was clean and comfortable. Aspects of it were a little tired but not at all a problem for us. Hotel reception staff were amazingly helpful and friendly, nothing was too much trouble. Attached restaurant was great too. We would definitely stay again.

First room had a broken shower door and had been smoked in, it stunk so we were offered another room. Staff seemed disinterested. However location wise the hotel was great cleanliness overall was okay. Room service adequate.

Good location, very clean and comfortable rooms. Close walk to Queen Vic Market and Lygon St restaurants. Tram stop just outside the hotel to travel to other parts of the city. Eateries & convenience stores just opposite. The hotel restaurant does not have too many options. The linen was clean and the staff were friendly and courteous which were the only real positives. The room had significant defects - a section of the ceiling paint was peeling off in great lumps as though a large leak at sometime in the past had occurred (no attempt to repair), a section of a wall was in similar condition (no attempt to repair) and […] one wonders about the mould spoor count and affect on health of people with ailments, the bathroom was in poor condition with cracked and broken tiles, grubby grout in shower recess, ill fitting shower screen door, loose toilet seat that did not respond to fixing. The Staff were excellent and courteous however the bathroom in my room was extremely dated and unfortunately not maintained. The toilet sistern was cracked, the bathroom/shower still had old, used shampoos and soaps from the previous guest and the toilet paper holder was broken. We stay here regularly and find it very convenient to Melbourne University and easy to get into the CBD or to Lygon St restaurant area. It's very nice and also clean and the best rooms are the ones overlooking the park in the side street adjacent to the hotel. The rooms at the front may be a ltitle noisy due to trams and traffic, however the rooms facing […] North and West are nice and quiet. The only drawback I see is that the hotel is growing old at the same rate I am. The bathrooms are getting to stage of needing renovation and on our most recent stay last week the bathroom was past that point. Some of the other rooms have a folding doors to the bathroom which we don't like. Hotel parking is a little expensive at $15 per night and the garage door opens automatically as you drive up which means anyone can open it and walk in to ransack the vehicles. As you need a code to open the door to get out it would be good to have a code to get in thus providing security for the cars. Breakfast is never included in my rate so I don't know if it's any good. You wouldn't think it would blow the budget if the hotel provided a continental breakfast to guests, it would save me going out to 7/11 next door and the small amount they spent on a bit of cereal and oj would reap huge benefits in PR for them. I was not made feel welcome. I was not advised of any carpark facilities. Staff treated me like a chore. They took credit card as holding deposit, when asked when the funds would be returned to my account. They blamed the the bank. I had to chase them 3 days it took for funds to be returned. The man infront of me was offered a complimently drink, we […] were not. I have stayed at 2star places and been treated much better. One staff member offered me something complimentry as I only stayed one night instead of 2 although I paid for 2. I understood there was no refund, however I had been threw a traumatic time, where I had witnessed a horrific fatal accident, which due to police interviews etc I was unable to stay my 2nights, whilst I understand this is not their problem, however a little compassion, maybe cheese and biscuits and a glass of wine would not have broken the bank. I can only say I will be advising my fb friends etc, and on my return would not consider this facility. We live in a very cut throat world, where service is the utmost. Rydges did not make my stay that of a pleasant nature. The original girl on the phone was lovely. The check in girl and check out staff, need to shape up or ship out. Lesa meira

Our stay was quite pleasant. The room was comfortable and adequate to our needs. We enjoyed the open air pool and spa. Location is extremely convenient to Melbourne's attractions. Tram right out the front.

Rooms need upgrading with most of the furnishings & fittings far too old. Breakfast was a disappointing & boring (for the price you pay!!!) particularly being the Christmas holidays, there was nothing ‘special’. Reception staff were simply delightful, courteous & 'bubbly' and surely made you most welcome.

My husband and i were fortunate to have a refurbished room, thus everything was clean and the bed was comfortable. However, i cant say the same if we had been assigned to a non-refurbished room. The staff were courteous and helpful, in general.

Hatter reading so many negative reviews just before I'd arrived with my partner, I wad immensely worried. But let metell you, the staff were immensely friendly, the pool was absolutely sensational and the queen spa suite was great value for money. O ly negative thing was the fact that there was no kitchen. Ut the staff were so friendly and provided […] us with plates or anything we needed upon request, no matter what time of night! In terms of location, I was able to take a quick five minute stroll up the road and found myself either on Lygon st or I. The city, so I wasn't really fussed about the kitchen as the variety was sensational. Additionally, that in room jacuzzi and the outdoor pool were the cherry on top. I would definitely recommend this place to people, not sure about the other rooms as i havent seen them but the queen spa suite was definitely well worth the trip. Lesa meira

Basically I expected more. At first I thought "this is nice" and the guy at the Reception desk was very helpful. When we got to our room there was an overwhelming bleach smell, which we very quickly learned was to try to mask the horrible mould smell in the bathroom. We spent the night in the room but the next morning we requested a room change, which […] the hotel staff were happy to arrange (it became quite obvious that this mould smell was no surprise to them). On our first morning I called the Reception desk to request to breakfast bowls and spoons so we could eat our weetbix. An hour later - no bowls, no spoons. So I went down to Reception to ask again and the very unhelpful girl told me to go into the restaurant and find them myself. I was really annoyed and to top it off, I couldn't actually find any bowls at all! Our second room had obviously been renovated as it was much nicer than our first room, but overall I wouldn't go back to Rydges on Swanston and I wouldn't recommend it. Lesa meira
