The location is superb. It is very close to everything you need and transportation. The restaurant had recently closed but the neighbourhood had numerous good eating establishments.

My wife and I just loved our stay at this quaint botique hotel! It is centrally located--just a block and a half away from Chinatown gate! We got a room on the 8th floor; it was clean and quiet; just right for our stay in SF. We needed a room this quiet and away from noises that could come from the street. It was just right to celebrate our 10th wedding […] anniversary. You gotta love the complimentary wine tasting in the early evening everyday! The personnel at front desk were very helpful. As we arrived late, the room is fine for our one night stay. The bathroom is tiny as is storage space. There is smell outside in the corridor and the room we had (can't remembered the number) had a constant noise from the ventilation or air condition from outside. The bed was comfortable and is nice to have coffee making facilities in your room as well […] as downstairs in the lobby. The price we paid we cannot grumble. It is tiny; the room was so small we had no place for the luggage, which ended up on one bed as we squeezed into a full size bed. The sink is in the bedroom, so you go to the toilette, then very unhygenically open the toilette door to access water to wash your hands. The showe was made for someone 7" tall; there was no way to properly direct the flow […] of water, which made it truly uncomfortable. Great location, two blocks from Union Square and many other restaurants and shops available at walking distance. What I didn't like was the size of the bathroom. To small, and very weird, but the sink is outside the bathroom, between the desk and the tv, why? I found that annoying. Perfect central location for all sights and access to transport. Requested quiet room upper floor away from traffic the week before and they accommodated us perfectly. Wine tasting evenings made it very sociable and an opportunity to meets other guests you wouldn't normally see.

I was a bit worried about the location and condition of this hotel. I knew it was next to a very nice restaurant but still a bit worried. The location was prefect for my needs, the hotel staff friendly and professional, my room was clean although a bit small but perfect for one person to sleep and get ready comfortably. This is a small, older hotel, but in a very convenient location for most of what you're going to want to do in SF. The daily wine reception in the lobby is a nice touch and they actually serve and know pretty good ones. The lobby itself is actually very cozy and nicely decorated with a fireplace, the kind of lobby you actually want to hang out in. Staff […] very friendly and helpful. They sent a fax through for me and when I asked if they could just charge it to my room, they said there would be no charge. When one of our party got delayed arriving into SFO, they assisted with trying to find transportation for him. Rooms are clean, but are a bit small and dated (full wall of mirrors in my room). I was by myself so not much of an issue for me. Beds very comfortable. Some noise from garbage trucks in the alley late at night. SF is not a place to hang out in your room, so if you do alot of that, you might lean towards the larger, more well known chains. And larger prices! We got ours for less than $100/night, hard to do in this area. I would return to EHVC although I would suggest they consider shortening or changing their name to make it easier for people to remember. ;-) Lesa meira

smallish rooms, but within range of what you expect for a big city hotel. room not thorough clean. ice bucket not emptied of melted ice, dirty glasses left in room, not replaced with clean glasses.

First, the staff was amazingly friendly and helpful throughout our visit. The cleaners worked with our hectic schedule to squeeze our rooms in during times that suited us. All of the staff that greeted us - behind the desk, during the wine happy hours, or simply crossing paths on the elevator - all of them made us smile. We've stayed here before and […] would stay here again. We enjoy the free wine happy hour and used it as an opportunity to talk with many other interesting travelers staying at the hotel - some for business, some on holiday. It's great sitting around the fireplace and getting comfy on the couches in the lounge. If I had any cons to list it would be the musty smell in our room, but that's one you find in many buildings of that age in that area in san francisco. My only other complaint would be the shower stall. It's quite small, too small too accomodate the new fancy showerheads that they've included. The shower aims at the wall instead of downward. It'd be fine if you were tall or average height, but shorter people will find the water hits the wall before it hits them. It's aesthetically pleasing, but doesn't work well in the space. Lesa meira

The room smells really bad, same as the hallways, you can hear your neighbors and people in the hallway, the sinks in the bathtub doesn't drain well, but it was cheap so can't complain too much, but I wouldn't stay again!

It's a older hotel, which showed in the fixtures and through a bit of a musty smell in the hallways, but it's a great location and a great price. Plus, with the a/c unit in my room, there was definitely no mustiness as I slept.

this is a very old boutique hotel. it is good for the price and had a refrigerator and microwave in it. the room i was in had some sort of water leaking which they tried to say that water was dropped and they promptly cleaned it up but then it was back so something else was wrong. they park you car for you and will bring it back anytime, that was nice. […] the staff was very nice. The lobby was beautiful, I wish my conference ended early enough that I could enjoy the nightly wine reception. The room was comfy and had personality, I loved that I could open the windows for air and the fridge was convenient. Every morning there was fresh brewed coffee in the lobby too. From the beginning to the end, this place was bad news. We encountered a couple of issues in the beginning and at 6pm on a Friday night, there was not a manager present to take care of them. Many places in the middle of the city can be noisy.. Our room was in a quiet alley way, though in the summer with windows open it could be noiser.. Still the quietest place in the city I've been.. About 2 blocks from union square (great location), great night staff (day staff was a bit more "all business").. Room was nice, clean, comfortable, albiet […] a bit dated (built in an older building, but nice).. Wine for happy hour and coffee in the morning.. Staff is very friendly and the service was good. The hotel is old similar to the other hotels in the area. However, it is well kept. The room was large and the amenities were ok. Being a bit north of Union Station, the location was very nice.

While I don't have a sensitive nose, the spell that permeated every area of this hotel was physically offensive. Coupled with the fact that the room, bathroom and common areas (except for part of the lobby) were worn, tired, in desperate need of an overhaul and seemed unclean. I ended up having to pay for the time I didn't stay there since it was non-refundable even after having to spend two plus hours on the phone with Hotels.com. To add additional insult the rate I paid on Hotels.com was 40% higher than what they were asking for on the day I checked in. Even if I the rate was 40% less I would never stay here even if my life depended on it. The hotel is a convenient, short walk to union square, but one must remember the hills in San Francisco, so it's at an incline. The staff are friendly and helpful. It is old, but clean. The best thing is the free wifi, which is rare in San Francisco. We felt welcome by this hotel who's staff we so accommodating, helping us with our sightseeing trips, airport transfers and general information needed. In addition they stored our excess luggage prior to and after check out so we could make the most of our time in San Fransisco! our sightseeing before our late flights.

The room had not been dusted up high in months. The light fixture in the bathroom had quite a case of fuzz-head. The toilet paper roll is in such and odd place that TWICE i knocked it into the toilet bowl. Yup! Two rolls wasted.

We have stayed here before and always loved it but probably won't stay again. The rooms are nice and the location is good, but the staff has changed and the customer service has dropped off a lot. This hotel was perfect for our visit. It was conveniently located to all the different modes of transportation and was walking distance to shopping, china town, union square and much more. I would highly recommend this hotel for someone looking for a great location, great price and vintage style hotel.

I find the hotel very convenient for everything I like to do in San Francisco. The cable car is one half block away. Chinatown is two or three blocks away. Union Square is four blocks. The muni and F line are six blocks. What this does is allow you access to the entire city for a very reasonable price. I suggest trying the little French Bistro's within […] two to four blocks, the food is wonderful. Also try Oz, were else in the city can you hear first class jazz for free and have a great burger for under ten dollars. Oz has a bagel and a smear that can easily be shared by two people with the salmon piled high on the bagel. Yes I will stay here again. Hotels.com did a great job of helping me to add my friends name so she can check in (she got there before me) however the Hotel Staff (front desk) were not very helpful at all! They were very rude! The hotel was in a good location and a great price. We had read the reviews before and weren't expecting anything fabulous. The reviews were right.... The rooms themselves are very old, which I was ok with, but it smelled old and kind of funky. The walls were paper thin. You could here people's conversation word for word.
