They got all the little extras just right from the lei greeting to seated check in to little smoothie samples throughout the day. Everyone treated us like royalty. The facility is a unique, beautiful oasis in the middle of bustling Waikiki. We can't wait to get back.

We booked the Royal Hawaiian for a special occasion as we wanted the best possible hotel experience. Maybe our expectation of this hotel was too high, but I just can't see what all the fuss is about. The rooms in the old part of the hotel are incredibly average, dark and dingy and reminded me of a roadside motel. Servicing of our rooms was so inconsistent, […] it became funny after a while. Some days no towels, some days, 8 towels! and my biggest pet-peeve, several days without bottled water, which they are charging you for in the resort fee they have brought in recently. Our experience with the service at this hotel was average at best. We had our child with us and only once out of 8 days did the concierge staff help to lift our stroller down the stairs, one of the days they looked at us directly and continued to talk amongst themselves. The staff at breakfast one morning had a bickering argument when one of the lovely older waitresses had accidentally served our table, the staff member who was allocated our table was furious that the older lady was on her turf and shouted at her in front of us. Don't expect service at breakfast either, they make you wait to be seated even when there a numerous tables free. The hotel foyer is beautiful and the Mai Tai bar fantastic! For the cost of this hotel stay we really were disappointed, it's almost deceiving that the RH has a 5 star rating, I have stayed in a few 5 star hotels in my time and this was by no means even close. Staying at this hotel is a beautiful experience! One of the oldest & grandest in Hawaii, elegantly retored with open-air common spaces, gardens, spacious rooms & high-end stores. The location is perfect if you want to be in the middle of all Waiki has to offer. Despite being located ON waikiki beach itself, when you walk into the hotel property, the […] tranquil lobby and common areas make you feel miles away from the bustle of the beach. The pool is small but well maintained with good service, and jacuzzi. pool seating is complementary but cabanas and beach chairs are available for rent. We enjoyed the Luau on Monday night. Set against the beach at sunset, it is more intimate than the huge luaus we heard about elsewhere. There were no bad views. My only complaint about the hotel is that we were taken by surprise at check in by an additional mandatory charge of $35 per person/ per night for "guest services" - which essentially included no additional services. It felt a little like we were being "nickel and dimed" after paying for a very high end hotel. I would have preferred just knowing the actual price of the room when we booked. Staying at this beautiful hotel may be worth the extra cost, but it is certainly not a pleasant surprise for anyone trying to relax - or stay on budget - for their vacation. Lesa meira

Best hotel in Waikiki by far! Beach on one side and city shopping on the other. The hotel is quiet even though you are in the middle of everything! Its pricey and worth every penny!

This hotel has the absolute best bar in the world and it is well worth visiting whether staying at the hotel or not. The Royal Mai Tai is the drink to start with! The hotel's superb location in front of the greatest beach with the fine view of Diamond Head makes staying here well worthwhile. The only slight downside might be the small pool, but there is always the ocean and the adjacent Sheraton pool which is shared with this hotel. If you want the genuine Waikiki beachfront hotel experience then you can't go past the Royal Hawaiian. The rooms and bathrooms are smaller and older style, but when you walk down to the lobby and look at that view you can imagine yourself there fifty years ago. Generally great, though I think we could have dealt with a less prime location (being a young couple with no kids). Didn't notice the $35 daily fee on top of the price (for gym and Internet, basically—you have no choice), plus steep rental fees for the beachfront chairs on top of that. On the plus side, the bed was CRAZY comfortable, good TV with good channels, room was clean and the right temperature, they gave lots of towels and free bottled water and banana bread. The perfect Hawaiian experience! The staff was top notch. I loved getting a lai when we checked in. In our room, they had pink champagne and fresh banana muffins waiting. The staff seemed happy and friendly. I bet it is a nice place to work. The hotel was decorated for xmas when we were there. Beautiful! I love the history of the place. Walking down the opulent foyer toward the beach or a cocktail at night overlooking the water was a great experience to remember. The hotel is beautiful and the staff was very friendly and helpful. Our room was on the small side tho. We also had requested an ocean front with balcony, and we were put on the 3rd floor, just eye level with the palm trees around the pool, wish we were up a few floors more to see more of the view. I love the Royal Hawaiian. I especially feel "royal" when I get to visit. Spending Thanksgiving Day in my "pink" chair on the beach was absolutely spectacular.

Upgraded to to top of tower room and joined Starwood Preferred Guest program. Received free international calls, paper etc. Service was superb, can't fault the housekeeping staff nor the tech. support staff.

The hotel is fine, but just does not deserve its ranking or status. The pool is dreadful, the beach is usurious (you'd think that you'd get a chair on the beach for the large sum you pay for a room but everything is extra here). Just a mediocre experience for such a pricey stay.

Hotel grounds and interior were beautiful. Staff was friendly and helpful. Checkout was at 12 o'clock and our plane didn't leave till evening. They were accomodating letting us stay in a hospitality room which was very comfortable. Walk right from your room onto the beach. The hotel has no exterior doors so there's always a sweet, crisp breeze blowing through the corridors. Staff is extremely friendly & accommodating.

All of the staff were great, except for one of the concierge was kind of snooty and not pleased that we wanted to know where we could find an L&L. She gave us a list of the "approved eating establishments," while her peer looked on line to help us. Not cool. Otherwise it was a great experience.

Everything about our stay was Great! The Staff was friendly and very helpful and made us feel at home. Our room had a great view. The only negative I would say was the AC in the room made everything feel wet.

From the time we arrived the staff were extremely efficient, friendly and helpful right through to the time we checked out. For example, we drove from the airport to the hotel in a rental car. The bell staff met us, unloaded the luggage and parked the car. We were shown to the well staffed reception area where we sat down at a desk where we were offered […] a cool drink while the receptionist explained the hotel features and benefits and answered our questions. Not met the expectation, some housekeeping didn't replace the shower gel, hand tower, coffee, water when they clean the room. I have to call front desk to tell them to bring over. Wi Fi sometimes work sometimes doesn't. The room didn't have the bathtub.

This is the classic Waikiki hotel, and it lives up to its reputation as the premier resort on on of the most famous city beaches in the world. We were very happy with all aspects of the resort and staff, and the prime location cannot be beat. We will certainly return again.

This was a last minute vacation and the hotel was GREAT! The staff was very nice, and very helpful. We were greated with the traditional Lei's for him and her, as well as juice. The hotel is full of personality and history, as well as being right on the beach! They have surfing lessons, hula classes, and it is one of the few in Waikiki that has a Luau […] on property. This vacation was just for 2 (my husband and myself) but we are planning on bringing our children to the island in the summer of 2013. We did not consider staying in Waikiki until we stayed here. This hotel is close to shopping, stores with snacks, restaurants of all types, and on the beach! The other thing I liked about this hotel was that is was on the beach, but not right on the main road, it is tucked away behind some of the stores, so even though you are in the middle of busy Waikiki, you feel like you are in your own little place. This hotel was very inviting and the staff was superb....from the moment we pulled up to the driveway of The Royal Hawaiian until the time we got in the van to go to the airport we were treated like family. The housekeeping staff were wonderful and Carolina in the evening always made sure that we had everything we needed. She made sure our beds were […] ready to jump into when we arrived in our room nightly....She was wonderful and very attentive. She is a wonderful lady and always was thinking of the girls and what they wanted and needed. Great customer service from her daily.....Funny lady too! She made our trip great! The night we arrived the bellhops gave us wonderful advice on where to eat late at night, and the staff at the pool were awesome and attentive.....they even remembered us the next day. Pohai(hope I spelled that right), Vinson and the staff at Waikiki Services were the bomb....making sure the girls always had what they needed and even took the time to take a picture with them for their scrap book.....high class gentlemen with great attitudes and always smiling. BEST Vacation I have ever been on. Sora and the guest services manager were absolutely incredible when a problem arouse at check out but they quickly went to action and resolved it right away. The checking experience was not good. We arrived in the morning after an all night flight and were advised we would not be able to access our room until 3.00. We asked about the possibility of an earlier checking and were told to check with reception later in the morning. We did this several times - the staff took no proactive approach to help us or […] alert us to the fact that our room was in fact available. For a 5 star hotel this does not rate as good service. The restaurant staff were pleasant and the room staff were efficient and helpful. It is probably time to update the restaurant menus and smarten them up a bit to meet the 5 star level. Lesa meira

Well, the Royal Hawaiian Hotel staff lacks simple understanding of what service in a "luxury" hotel should be. Starting from greeting and check in the staff makes you feel like you owe them something! The room was not ready by 3pm, and when it was finally ready by 3.30, it was a wrong room ( one queen bed to accommodate 3 people). Fine, we do undersatand […] that you might be busy, but simple appology for your mistakes would be nice. Instead you get this: " If you want a different room, wait another 45 min. We are busy." So after you go straight to guest services and complain, you get the right room right away? Unacceptable!!!!!!! The rooms are ok. Small beds though. The cleaning lady was the only person to say hello and smile. One of the days the hotel had an emergency and hot water shut off. We got a note the night before.Thanks The pool is tiny, so the Hotel partners with Sheraton Waikiki to use their pool.Service at both pools is mediocre if not poor! There are few umbrellas and no one will move them for you. The pool men would watch you move your own chairs in the shade and not move a finger!!!! I even asked them if they enjoyed the show.... The beach is dirty and not private!!!!!! Private means just for the guests, not putting a rope around the area and separating it from public use, people!!!!! Very nice hotel and a very nice experience. I appreciated the Summer $5 valet parking special they were running as the parking garage is a hike from the hotel. This hotel is very interesting from a historic aspect. Nice amenities and a very service oriented staff. We especially enjoyed chatting with some of the valet staff and roomservice staff. We come to this property every year at the same time for our birthday weekend. It started with my wife and I 3 years ago, then the last 2 years with our little boy. We love it there it is truly a place where you can appreciate the beautiful views, beaches and hospitality. These kindly gentlemen exhibited the most unique way of making all 3 of us feel welcomed and special. My petite 9-year-old granddaughter was star-struck by the beauty of this pink, palatial hotel. It only took about 7 minutes to get checked in; the front desk staff were friendly and unbelievably gracious as was the staff at the conciere desk who were responsive to our needs throughout our stay. The hotel was truly royal. The housekeeping staff was superb; our room kept tidy and stocked with bottled water daily; bed turned down every evening with chocolate. This is our 2nd time back to the Royal Hawaiian and 4th time back to Hawaii. It was just as good if not better than the first time. The staff are so friendly and it really feels like you are home and made very welcome. The food, drinks and ambient were all great and we will definitely be going back. This year you had to pay to reserve your place on […] the beach (not by the pool) for 2 lounges, unbrella etc like you do in Europe, which was different to previous years. The staff was always helpful and plesant. They could not do enough for my wife and myself. The food at the Aszure Resturant was also a 5. The price for the hotel and the resturant was quite fair and a value for the quality presented. We plan to return.

We stayed in the restored historic wing and loved the feel and position of the hotel, right on the beach with lots of old world charm and a sense of luxury. The bar and restaurants are top notch with lovely staff. The Azure Restaurant was brilliant and the waiter we had was very well informed and helpful with a great manner. We were disappointed with […] the lack of information about amenities and worked out eventually that you had to ask to find out things - a bit different from what we are used to with electronic and written information in most other places. When we asked, we got good information and helpful service. The resort fee includes internet acess (fine if you have brought a lap top) but no wifi so we could not take advantage of it - also a "new" charging system meant a pretty steep payment for beach chair hire which was advertised as in the resort fee when we booked. Nevertheless, we really enjoyed our week at the Royal Hawaiian and will recommend it as a lovely, special place to stay in Hawaii. Lesa meira
