Outdoor lobby of hotel is nice. The check in was easy but not allowed to check in early. Partial ocean view room was right on Alii Dr which is very busy and noisy, with a local/homeless camp right accross the street. Room was clean, but older furnishings. Did find a cockroach on the floor one AM, but it is Hawaii. TV remote batteries didn't work and […] had to make 2 visits to the front desk to get some. The first visit they said they ran out and wouldn't have anymore until tomorrow. We insisted they find some and then they went to another room that was not occupied (which there were many) and got some from another remote. There are nicer places to stay in Kona. Kona Islander is nicer and cleaner and cheaper. Go there insted. Lesa meira

"If you like to surf"
This hotel is right in front a surf break and there is a surf shop next to the lobby where you can rent a board if you don't want to deal with taking one on the airplane. Our condo was on the mountain side, still easy enough to get to the beach. It seemed like they forgot to clean the bathtub, lots of random hairs which was gross. I did not enjoy staying at this condo. The sheets were thread bare, the air conditioning sounded like a train and it was not clean. The staff were not helpful - after 5 days there we were offered a key to the swimming pool. Our telephone did not work, reported this to the office and three days later I went back to tell them that the telephone still […] did not work. The office informed me that it would not be fixed for the next few days. The property is split between ocean front and a very busy highway. We had ocean view but were on the other side of the highway - very noisy. You could not sit out on your lanai. A terrible place to say! Lesa meira

"Great Condo!"
The Kona Bali Kai is located either on, or across the street from the ocean. Our unit was directly on the ocean front so I can give little comment on the other units, I could guess that the units street side could be a little noisy due to the trafffic. However, i am guessing that the upper floors would still see a reasonable view of the ocean. A great […] number of condos are located on main roads through out the islands so it is not unusual. We chose to spend a little extra money and book an ocean front unit. I assume that most of these condos are privately owned. Therefore, the condition of each unit is kept up by the individual owner. Our 3rd floor unit was reasonably well kept up, and although a little older,it was comfortable and clean. There is a small beach in front of the ocean front units so they have set up lounge chairs for the guest to sit and enjoy the view. It also has lava rock ponds that can be searched and enjoyed for water critters. I watched a sea turtle from the lanai (balcony)one morning. Noise from the ocean is going be a personal thing as well. We didn't mind it at all. It could annoy some people probably.So keep that in mind as it can get quite noisy at night when the tide comes in. The pool area is nice and also includes a hot tub. The desk staff was very pleasant and helpful. The parking is ground level under the main building. It is well set up and secured with discreet staff on duty. All in all we really enjoyed our stay at the Kona Bali Kai.It is fairly close in distance to the main area with shops and many great resturants to explore. I would stay there again in a heartbeat. "Need a car"
Can walk to the beach across the road but would need a car for anything else. The unit was a bit run down and could use a real good clean, but it was pretty comfortable. Had a washer and dryer - which was great, but no dishwasher.

it is not a fancy hotel, but what you pay is what you get. In that sense, this hotel was quite cozy and the price was low. Location was nice for us too. located a bit away from the center of Kona, you can have a quiet night.

"Great for family long stay"
I stayed with my parents just one night after arriving at Kona on way to stay at the volcano. Definitely check to see which side of the road your reserved unit is on to manage your expectations. We were on the beach side, and my mom loved hearing the rush of the surf all night. The complex is 30yrs old, and is really a bunch of privately owned condos […] with a 24 hr reception desk. It was far enough away to have low traffic noise, but just a quick drive back to get breakfast. It had a full kitchen and would be great for families who want to cook/eat in to save some money. There was a small sandy beach with public access off the end of the complex which was popular for morning surfers/boogey boarders. a small strip of grass between building and reef had a nice gas grill for bbq-ing. We really like the location especially because we got to see lots of sea turtles right outside our room every day. The sunsets were gorgeous. However, the kitchen was not as well stocked with the basics as we would have liked, and the bed was VERY hard. "Spend the extra $30"
Spend the extra $30 and stay at the Marriott instead. The location and property were good but the condo unit was very poorly maintained. We had 1 working lamp and no working TV! Everything was chained down or bolted (even pictures on the wall). We checked out early once we saw "Please do not steal" written on the plastic shower curtain
"Cheap Getaway"
I would recommend the Bali Kai to anyone looking for a place located close to Alii Drive (the center of town, main tourist shops) but still far enough to provide a level of privacy. They also have full kitchens which allows for the option to cook your own meals (for those chefs out there), yet you are seconds away from some of Kona's award winning resturaunts […] (for the culinary-challenged). The staff there are warm and welcoming. Internet service is available and fast (roadrunner). The condo is located right on the shoreline and has access to a small beach break with outdoor grills for guests. The overall winning factor are their rates. I live on the opposite side of the island where it frequently rains. I have no problem paying their rates to have a nice weekend getaway in the Kona sun. Lesa meira
"Very comfortable - felt like home"
The room we had at the Kona Bali Kai was actually someone's personal condo that they rent out while not in Hawaii. It was filled with everything one could need for an extended stay in Kona, including dishes, wine glass and surf boards. Our room was in the back of the compound, away from the main road and was very quiet. We especially enjoyed smelling […] the ocean air mingling with the plumeria flowers while laying in our bed with the doors open. Pure Hawaiian bliss. "Kona Bali Kai"
Not as advertised. Part of the complex is on the ocean side and then there is another part across the street. We were in the part across the street on the street level. Our lanai / balcony was 2 feet wide with the view and sounds of Kona's main road. The women at the front desk had bad attitudes and seemed inconvenienced when we checked in. "Concierge should be Fired"
The concierge at this hotel turned what should have been a very pleasant stay into an awful experience (and ruined our mood for the day) If anyone has a choice of staying here vs any other hotel on the Kona Hotel strip, select another hotel. After staying in Hilo for 4 nights we traveled to the Kona side for the 2nd half of our Hawaii trip. We booked […] a Luau and were looking for other activities to do while on the Kona side. We approached the concierge for advice and suggestions. The concierge was reading his paper and barely interested in conversation. I explained that we had booked a Luau and were looking for other activities. Once he found out that we booked the Luau through an Information Center in Kona, he refused to speak to us any longer. He refused to offer additional suggestions on what to do, where to go, etc (the things that a tourist wants to know when they are in a foreign place !). He was extremely rude, unhelpful and smug. He gives this hotel a bad reputation by employing him. As for the hotel itself, when we booked the hotel we had 2 requests 1) King Size Bed 2) Free WiFi. When we arrived, even though it said on the reservation that we had a King Bed, the hotel refused to give us a room with one (due to availability). As for the Free WiFi, yes they have free WiFi ...In the Lobby only !!!! not in the room. Instead you need to have an ethernet cable (which the hotel will provide for free) for room access. Unfortunately, when you plug in the cable, you need to drag the cable box, wires, etc across the floor, bed, etc to get to a comfortable seat. There is no way to get "connected" without having wires spread all out across the floor, etc. If you bring your iPad, you will be disappointed because you will not be able to use it in your room. "Two nights in Kona"
OK hotell at the coast of Kona. Very nice, big bed and good location (with walking distance to Magic Sands beach).
Big room but outdated decor. An old and completely deformed bed mattress made it impossible to sleep ! We have had old mattresses before, but even the trick of turning it around did not help ...
"no a/c in bedroom and uncleaned unit"
Each condo is owned by independent people, therefore I can totally see where if you got a cool condo this would be a great experience. My unit was furnished with outdated flimsy stuff. I should say it was awesome to have a full kitchen and dishes, etc. for the price, for sure! Price was average overall for the area and time of year. There was no a/c […] in the bedroom, only one little window unit in the living room - was very hot and uncomfortable at night. I was on the 3rd floor. :( Views of the city were cool though, and the unit came with high-speed internet and cable. There were long hairs and other evidence that the unit had not been properly cleaned (ew). Other than that, the staff were friendly, the unit had a washer and dryer (FANTASTIC), and overall it wasn't terrible, but not great either. I'd rate it a 6.8 out of 10... if it had been clean, it would have been more like an 8.8. Lesa meira
"Average price, average location"
We suspect that this place could be very different depending on which apartment that you are allocated. Ours unfortunately had all of the furniture and paintings chained to the wall and DO NOT STEAL written on multiple items. Fair enough for towels and smaller items but how on earth is someone going to lug a queen sized mattress back home with them […] is logistically different. It seems that they have had bad experiences with renting the place out, so much so that it affected the place, the decor was old and obviously cheap, the carpet had so much protectant on it that it was slippery. The apartments are located a little way out of the centre area of town, own transport would be recomended. There were some positives, the overall area was nice, the mountain view that we had from our apartment was lush and green. We think that if you got the right apartment this place would be great value for your $ however if you end up in one like we did it is only good as a place to sleep. Lesa meira
well we were disappointed. the pool was closed. the wifi was not working and the maintanence working came and had to call a friend for help to repair. the tv remote worked only sometimes. the room was dirty as well as the general areas. very disappointed. we are not critical travelers. i must say the lady at the desk was very cold. will not go back […] . "Castle Kona Bali Kai in Kona"
The rooms were big, but old looking and not very clean. They charge extra for everything even towels, the staff is almost impossible to find and are not very friendly or helpful. The pool had way too much chlorine, leaving my eyes shot red for 2 days. It was on the water but the beach is rocky and lots of local surfers can be seen. So not the best place […] to swim. The rooms are way over priced. Only good part was the big kitchen. Which was good cause it was the only place in the room where we could access the Wifi. Lesa meira

"Kona Bali Kai"
This was a great location and we enjoyed that we had a kitchen to eat in, instead of spending more money on food during our stay. The only recommendation that I would tell Kona Bali Kai is to have free internet access in the lobby for their guests. I was a little irritated to pay for access and get all of these popup windows that ate my time up.

"2nd Attempt at Staying at the Kona Bali Kai"
This was our 2nd attempt at staying here...first visit wasn't a great experience. See below for my first review. Our second visit was better but I still wouldn't recommend this place to you. Building is old, furniture squeeks, bed very uncomfortable and also squeeks. Linen was still not new, it smelled like sunscreen from the previous guests. "Dirty, Old, Not So Clean, but Great Location"
We stayed here at the Kona Bali Kai in 4/15/11. Front desk was nice and professional. This is not a hotel, it is a timeshare condo that rents out units to visitors. The room was nasty!! Dusty floors, stink shower curtains, and the linen wasn't clean..it smelled like a sweaty old guy just rolled of bed!! If you want clean linens, they will charge you […] $45 for a service that should be expected! The location is about a 10 minute drive from shopping and restaurants. The beach front is great with tidepools that frequent Hawaiian sea turtles. Would I stay here again? Unfortunately, we prepaid for another night so we had to stay one more night (or lose out on our money). Second visit was much better; however, I would NOT recommend this 'hotel' to others. "Bali Kai Big Island Stay JUNE 2011"
The oceanfront units are RIGHT on the beach. The staff was friendly and the pool was well maintaned. Had two units, very affordable and will stay there again on next outing to Big Island.
"noisy and overpriced"
On the side of a busy road, no proper windows ( good for fresh air but bad for the road noise), noisy air conditioner. Hot and noisy, bad combination for a sweet sleep. Not very clean and definitely overpriced. I slept here one night out of 15 in Hawaii and this was the lowest point ( well, not everything has to be perfect in Hawaii).
"Expensive Dump"
The hotel was dirty, blood on the wall in the bathroom, cockroaches and mold in the showers. I had booked a room for 5 people, the first room only had room for 4 so when I asked about it they moved me into their best suite. It was worse than the first. I would condem the building until it was fumigated.

Although the accomodations are not spectacular, it was comfortable and a friendly environment. A nice break from regular hotel rooms.
"Sometimes you get what you paid for"
This hotel was difficult to find. We were thankful it was light out. The room was rough to say the least. We kept our sandals on inside the room. You could clearly see hair and dirt on floor. There was also a pretty scary verbal altercation outside of our room at 1235am that lasted until almost 2am between a man and a woman. Hello where was security? "Perfect Stay"
We had a great time, the room was fantastic, clean, a bit musty but nothing opening a few windows wouldnt fix. The front desk was extremely helpful espectially Antonio. Definitely need a car to get around but the locals told us about the bus and trolley so it was very helpful. The views were exceptional and the noise from traffic was not that bad. "Ok but a bit noisy"
We stayed in a studio which had everything, very big and with balcony. It was not the cleanest hotel but it was ok after we told them to clean the floor again because after a few steps we had our feet black! There is no room service but the staff are friendly. "Castle in Kona"
We arrived without a place to stay in Kona. Had looked at this hotel online before arrival. Mt view studio room still has ocean view from balcony. Full kitchen nice to have but if you stay more than one night they do not refill your coffee for the rest of your stay :( Could be cleaner but still fine. We actually stayed 2 nights and then returned 2 nights […] later for a 3 night stay. We were given the same studio and we noticed right away that a minor cleaning was done but that the shower still had our dirty washclothes and shampoo in it. We knew it was ours as no one else had stayed since we left so not gross but if it was someone elses, that would be gross! Traffic noise from the road makes it impossible to leave window open at night for fresh air. Would stay again out of convenience though. Lesa meira
"Condo Kona Bali Kai, ocean view room"
We found the Condo to be conveniently located, comfortable. In general the building needed refurbishing/painting. Grounds kept up nice, setting and views great. Furnishings were dated including the appliances. The carpet needed cleaning badly. All in all, we felt we got our monies worth but wished it was cleaner.
"Kona Bali Kai"
We were late arrving from our flights into town and the staff was very helpful as we called for directions and announced that we were running late. This hotel has access out the door to one of the few hotel beach and wading areas (very small but present). Grassy area with chairs was great, too. It was nice that the kids could explore and swim some without […] our having to leave the hotel. The room had plenty of space and a neat three piece sliding door that gave the master bedroom privacy but also allowed us to open up the area to great space. Private lanai gave us a wonderful view of the water. There was no air conditioning, but it wasn't needed because the ceiling fans and breeze kept us very comfortable. A car is needed to get around. This was in a great location -grocery store, open air market, restaurants, beaches, etc within a few minutes drive. Lesa meira
"extra helpful"
Kona Bali Kai is a bit run down. We chose it for location and having 3 beds in the 2 bedroom. My daughter left her Nintendo DS and a school book in the room, we called and they mailed them to us in Texas. We were shocked that they really did it. How nice!!
Not very clean, floors are sticky and kitchen supplies looks old and rusty.

"Not too shabby"
This place is alright. The rooms look like they could use a little bit of maintenance, but nothing too serious. The bathrooms were clean. The main living area was nice and well lit. All in all I was pretty satisfied with my stay here. Fabulous view if you stay in the seaside wing.
"Very durty and bad smeal"
The kitchen was not clean. The drawers were the utensils were kept were duty with pieces of food and such. The sink in the bathroom had mold growing behind the faucets and had a very bad smeal. I tried to keep the window in the shower open to help but it was bad. I used fabries to be able to get into the area without getting sick. I really think that […] the crew do not know how to clean. I was allowed two bath towels for two people and they would not give me new towels for a 5 day stay. I had to complain about this and they finally gave me two extra bath towels. This is just not resonable. The beach in front of the hotel is very nice and I did enjoy watching the sunsets. The cealing in the room had things hanging from it. I think it was a combination of dust and lint. In any case it needed to be cleaned. The table to eat meals was directly under the dirty cealing so it was scarry to eat not knowing what could fall into the food. Lesa meira
