We stayed for four nights in this marvellous hotel. Very close to Valletta. We really enjoyed our stay there! Nothing was amiss!!!

Lovely staff in all areas, very comfortable rooms, decor a little dated but good quality. Odd set-up with the mini-bar - having to order on demand what you would like (which is basically room service rather than a mini-bar, but it does remove the temptation to eat all the chips after you've had a beer)

We are frequent visitors to Valetta and this hotel just gets better all the time.Staff go the extra mile with a smile breakfasts are the best and of course the location is the very best. Book and you will not be disappointed

Excellent service by staff. Excellent breakfast buffet. Room furniture is a bit dated and appears to have had better days, in particular the wardrobe. Armchair not very comfortable. Also it was obvious that room floor was not swept regularly. Overall excellent and would recommend hotel....good value for money.

Nearly everything was terrific about the Excelsior. The employees were all very friendly, breakfast was good, and the location is a few minutes walk from the heart of Valletta. The only negative points would be that the jacuzzi was colder than the swimming pool.

This was a nice hotel overall. It's really close to Valletta, less than a 10 minute walk gets you right in to the heart of the city. The one annoying problem we had was that we wanted to use the indoor jacuzzi but the water was cold. We told them about this multiple times but they never did anything about it. Other than that it was a pleasant stay.

The breakfast is overpriced and not very good - at EUR 17.50 it's a rip off - hot food was cold, and nowhere does it say how much breakfast costs. You are better to walk over to the nearby cafes behind the bus station. Staff are excellent. We had a standard room which had an adjoining door to another room. Although the door was locked, our neighbours […] tried to get through the door, and we were woken up several times in the morning when their phone rang, when their alarm rang, and when they received texts on their mobile and it pinged. We upgraded our room to a harbour view; but there was an odour in the room which the hotel seemed unable to attend to. We had to ask for the light bulb on the terrace be replaced as it was malfunctioning. It is a large hotel with good facilities but dated. However we found the staff exemplary, very helpful and genuinely anxious to assist. Wonderfully helpful and friendly staff with a great location to explore Valletta and the surrounding areas on the buses. The bar and reception boasts a fantastic view out onto the bay. My stay at the Excelsior hotel was lovely and very comfortablewith fantastic sea views, excellent service, very cleaned rooms but with no mini-bar inside the room. Location of this hotel is great but be aware of steps that you have to climb to get to the town and bus stations. Food was really good. Dining room has a great view of the harbour. The quality of the hotel amenities was good but the price for buffet dinner was very expensive considered menu and slow beverage service. The wifi was free and the breakfast rich and complete. The street entrance is 84 steps down or a machine access.

Classic European service. Large hotel with all of the amenities. Delicious coffee, wonderful breakfast buffet. Fantastic location - right outside the city gates of Valletta and local bus station. Staff very attentive, courteous, and conscientious. I was travelling alone and was very comfortable to dine there or relax in the lounge. Decor just the slightest […] bit tired but very clean. This hotel is superb especially if you want to explore beautiful Valletta. It is a short walk (up some steps but manageable) into the centre to visit all of the Churches, shops, sights, film experiences or the saluting Battery. The bus depot for bus tours is also close by. The room was very clean and very well maintained. The cleaning staff worked incredibly hard keeping everything immaculate. The only slight downside we had was the hot water pressure in the shower which was not fantastic. It was manageable but slightly difficult when easing my very long hair! All of the waiting staff were very attentive but not over the top and those on reception were always very polite and helpful. We ate most of our meals in the hotel and there was not a bad course among them. We were there during the European Film Festival and it got very busy but we never felt it was overcrowded or that they didn't have time for us. All parts of the hotel team helpful from the taxi service through to the maid service. Mildly offensive odour in lobby area - never quite sure what was the cause of that. Otherwise great fun had by all my patry of 5 women!!

the hotel and surrondings are very much 5 star quality, the rooms are not. The first room we were in the carpet, although not technically dirty, had stains all over it. The second was marginally better. I've seen better carpets in a motorway travelodge, not something that you'd expect from a 5 star hotel!

The staff were excellent, polite and helpful. The facilities were extremely good too, those I used... The centre of Valletta is a very brief walk away, so the hotel is conveniently situated for ease of access. They were also prepared to arrange transport for other tourist visits involving taxis etc. My only issue on staffing was that we left for […] our flight early on the Saturday morning and there was only one member of staff on reception for checkouts. As there were a number of other guests also aiming for early flights, the process was slower than it should have been. the carpets in the hotel rooms are disgusting. I had them move me from my first room because it was so bad i did not want to walk on it. While the one time courtesy ride into town was nice, the walk was very difficult.

Only spent i night... such a beautiful hotel the grounds gorgeous a bit hilly for those with disability's,The foyer amazing the room needs a little maintenance but overall a wonderful stay,the staff excellent.

The interior is excellent & provides first class service. However, the exterior lacks character - it is supposed to represent a cruise liner, but the concrete structure looks a bit tired. We were staying here with our 2 children at the end of October 2012. We had to book 2 interconnecting rooms which made it a lot more expensive. Last year we stayed at Westin Dragonara where we booked a room with 2 queen beds - a lot cheaper option. But we found the staff at Excelsior more friendly. The hotel has a bizarre policy on towels etc - all […] is policed and has to be paid for if lost. This may lead to people taking other towels at the pool. I found this enoying at a 5star hotel . The robes in the rooms were tired and well used. But overall we had a good time mainly because of the friendly attitude of the staff around us. Also the view from the courtyard is to die for. The outside pool is the best part. The hot tub inside is not hot - would be beneficial. Our rooms were on the first floor with easy access to the pools and courtyard - again this was really good for us. Lesa meira

This was our first visit to Malta and we were extremely pleased with the standard of the Grand Hotel Excelsior. Our room did not have a very good view, however both restaurants we used had suberb views over the harbour towards Sliema. The staff in the bar and restaurants were very attentive and courteous, and we also thought meals and drinks were exceptionally […] good value. The hotel was only a 10 minute walk from Valletta Cathedral, the only downside being a fairly steep climb. I would use this hotel in the future and recommend to anyone, especially if you feel like a little pampering. Lesa meira

We were truly pleased with our choice. Excellent all round. Close to city centre but quiet. Sea view or harbour view rooms well worth going for. Breakfast was very good indeed. Did not use the restaurant in the evening choosing to walk and explore the many city centre street restaurants. That said the hotel menu looked varied and sensibly priced.

Very good location and facilities. Food good but most service sub-standard for a 5 Star hotel. Management's approach to up front charging (including 50 euros a day for possible extras), mini bar stocking, "survey" at check out so guests can be charged for missing towels, bathroom items, remote control holders etc etc - even laundry bags - is insulting […] to guests and is silly practice. My wife & I went for our anniversary and loved it. It was convienently close to Valetta, and they have a shuttle service that will take you all over the island. The spa is fantastic, and the pools are nice. The "private beach" isn't much, and I would hardly call it a beach, but that's not too big of a deal. Definitely would stay here again.

The room itself and hotel building was lovely and perfectly located. The one thing that let this hotel down massively was the service. It was incredibly slow. From getting a drink by the pool, to queuing for breakfast (often a minimum of 12 people deep) to getting our room made up (often only at 3pm despite being out for many hours in the day), the […] service, although friendly was often unbearably and very disappointingly slow. We went 'out of season' so I can only imagine what it must be like in season! The cost of meals was too high. There should be an option to have a continental breakfast. Being forced to use the hotel's own limousines and not use outside taxi services added a cost.

good location - 4min walk to Bus terminus, close to city center; nice view of harbour; good customer service, taxi service seems a bit pricey (set rates should be displayed), and room service charge (5 euros) should be included in the service. Room very spacious, robe & slippers provided, hair dryer worth changing (mine didn't work but housekeeping […] brought me a new one in 5 minutes so cannot complain); also ironing board requires "upgrade". Wonderful location and seaview over marina to watch Rolex Midsea race. A good 5 star with all the amenities and a great breakfast. Easy walk to Valetta City and sights and bus station just a couple of minutes walk away. I will come again

The room carpet was badly stained, the air-conditioning was always noisy even when switched off. Shower door leaked and caught on its base when opening and closing.

nice hotel, good rooms, very good pool area, bad food, extremely disappointing service, penny-pinching attitude from all we met. Room not cleaned, meal served to room was rancid fish, very poor response initailly by staff. Would not stay there again, better hotels by far in the area.

Really lovely hotel and staff, very clean, the pools are lovely, the outdoor pool is a bit refreshing, but otherwise fab.

We think the hotel with it's facilities and chilled atmosphere certainly deserves it's 5 stars but there was room for improvement. Our bathroom facilities were a bit worn; the shower leaked when in use and the toilet seat had parted from the pottery, the soap supplied smelled like industrial cleaning fluid (take your own soap unless you like to smell […] like a public toilet), though the rest of the unctions were OK. And in the bedroom the carpet was very stained, our rooms needed a lick of paint and freshening up generally. The hotel experience was a very relaxing and most of the staff were helpful and friendly. The highlight for us was the balcony in the room with it's fantastic views. The indoor and outdoor pools and the hotel's small beach with access to the waters of the med. The low points was definitely the quality of the hotel food,. It was OK but certainly not 5 star gourmet fayre. Lesa meira

A true 5 star hotel. Beautiful setting, great pool and beach. Nice to swim/float in the sea off the beach of the hotel. Superior breakfast. Superb overall! one of the nicest hotels we ever stayed at. Great location in Vallenta for close by touring.

I really enjoyed the stay, staff were always ready to help but not intrusive. The room was very good (carpet perhaps needed a little attention) Breakfast was superb with excellent choice and waiters were always on hand to clear the table and to provide coffee or tea. I stayed for 4 nights 3 with my son and 1 night on my own and felt as comfortable in […] the hotel on my own as when I had company and would be very happy to stay there in the future on my own. Reception was very efficient in providing information, in responding to requests and providing my final invoice. The provision of hotel taxis was excellent both during the day and for very early transport to the airport. Cleaning staff provided a very good service and not once intruded whilst we were in the room by the time we arrived back in the evening thr room was in the same excellent state as when we arrived Lesa meira

Beautifull hotel, we stayed for a week and enjoyed every minute. From the moment we arrived to the taxi trip to the airport when we were leaving we were treated very well.
