Halana Hale Vacation Rental – Volcano

This location was great for a weekend get-away. Our host, Mahi was gracious and shared lots of info that helped us enjoy the volcano area to the fullest. She also made sure we had fresh papayas and baked goods every morning.

The Halana Lodge was quiet and in a peaceful setting. It met our needs for close proximity to Volcanoes National Park and the host was very helpful with offering ideas for siteseeing. I would stay here again.

Excellent location. Very nice, kind owner. We stayed 2 nights to visit the National park and it was a great place to stay. Very quiet, lovely place for less than $125. Internet, breakfast, parking all free. Definitely I would recommend.

We stayed at the Halana Lodge for 2 nights when we were travelling around the the Big Island.... There is not much to book in Volcano Village, the Lodge is set very far back in the woods of Volcano Villaage and it is almost like you are travelling on a deserted road. The inn keeper herself was very knowledgable and helpful but the lodge it self was […] cold and damp and quite uncomfortable, especially after a long day exploring the Volcano national park and all you'd like to do is come back to a warm and cozy lodge, this was not the place for that. We had the Blue Hawiian room with private shower and toilet. There was an issue with the hot water, especially if everyone had a shower in the am .... the first morning we literally had no hot water for a shower. The continental brekafast was ok... nothing special. If you were travelling in the summer time in Hawaii and were going to Volcano Village I would say that the Halana Lodge would be a better choice, but as we were there in March and it was cold this would not be a suitable location for this time of year (March 2013) Lesa meira

We found this to be a very comfortable home and enjoyed our two nights there. It's location is perhaps more rural than some would like, but we found it to our liking. The hotel was a bit of a hike, but once we got our bearings easily accessible. The staff was very friendly and knowledgable. Surrounding areas were breathtaking.

The owner of the hotel is the best tour advisor on Big Island. All her suggestions were great and saved us money because we didn't have to book tours.

The lodge is great. Much better then the pictures online. the location is pefect if you want to visit the volcano park, mount loa and the black beach. Note that our gps had the street but not the number. If you drive after dark then drive slowly because it is in the middle of a forest and easy to miss. The rooms are very comfortable. Note that food […] wise there are a few restaurants in the village, 5 , min drive but at 21:00 everything is closrd. Ther is a small store where you get the basics but fruit, vegtebals and so is a problem. Get what you need in hilo before you come. The landlord us nice and helpful with directions and so on. When we arrived inside the B&B for our 2-day stay, there were multiple vases--all with dead flowers in them. All the house plants were droopy. It wasn't very appealing. The general appearance was run down.

While the B&B operator, Mahi, was very nice and helpful, the house itself was fairly old and musty from the wet climate. We stayed for a week and our towels never dried out and the climate at the lodge was much colder than down near the ocean. The staff - Nancy and Mahi - were wonderful, helpful people. Very informative about what to see and how to get there. Breakfast was nice continental with scrabbled eggs. All guest ate together which was really nice for swapping information. The location is very remote if you are visiting Kalapana, Pahoa, or Hilo be prepared for 45-60 min drive one way. […] You are 10 minutes max from Volcano National Park. We spent 3 great nights at the Halana Lodge, and loved every minute there. The location is excellent, the home is very large and comfortable, and the hostess is quite welcoming; she truly enjoys sharing information and recommendations about the area. This was a good home in which to relax after the many activities available in the Volcano area.

I would not recommend this location as the B&B. We stayed several nights. One morning we were asked to clean up after ourselves, another morning we were told we could make breakfast ourselves. The bathroom floors were still dirty and the hostess tried to be friendly but didn't do a very good job.

This is a large seven bedroom lodge, and we had it all to ourselves. No one else was there. It rained all the time and was fairly cold. Hot tub was only tepid so we didn't make use of it. The little wood stove did not work so we heated the place with the kitchen oven and a couple of little portable heaters. This is supposed to be a bed and breakfast; […] however, the breakfast part was mostly missing. The hostess left us alone and we read books most of the time when we were there. She only fixed breakfast for us one of the three mornings although there was plenty of food in the refrigerator that we made use of. It is located about 3 miles outside of Volcano so it's very isolated and quiet, which was OK for us since we were wanting a quiet get-away. It's fairly close to Kiluea crater and the National Park. Driving towards the hotel in the middle of a rainy night felt like being in a horror movie - the road was getting smaller and smaller, no lights that we could see, and the GPS told us, "arriving at destination on left", and all that we could see was what looked like a small farm road. We decided to drive on for as long as the road remained paved, and […] after what seemed like an eternity but probably was more like 1/4 to 1/2 mile we finally saw the Halana Lodge on the left (after seeing a "sleepy hollow" sign on the right). The Halana Lodge is a what I would call a private lodge situated in what looks like a large single family house, and the owners (who stay in their own house) provide breakfast every morning (although we did not have the opportunity to sample their breakfast due to our busy schedules - yes, we would head out around 6am every morning to catch the good morning light for photography). The lodge probably has about half a dozen rooms, large lounge areas and a hot tub on the deck. The Lodge is very clean and quiet, and it was a welcome difference to the hustle and bustle of Waikiki where we arrived from. Lesa meira

Yes, it is a 5 minute drive from the main highway and not that easy to find, but the place is a gem. Run by two committed hosts this lodge with only a few rooms makes you feel at home instantly. Breakfast is personally prepared and delicious. It is the ideal stay for visiting the vulcanoes, plus the tips given by the hosts are priceless

Very clean! The house was big enough to be comfortable for all guest. We went out and enjoyed the hot tub outside shielded from the rain. Very relaxing! Beds were comfortable. Breakfast was amazing!!!

First, I have to say that the owners are really very nice people. I just don't think they have quite captured the essence of running an inn. I would have given this 1 star except for them being so nice. I appreciate the work they are doing but... This is actually a B&B. Older large home with bedrooms converted to lodging rooms. It was clean enough but […] carpets were old, stretched out and place was very humid inside. We arrived to find a post-it on the door advising us which room was ours and nobody around. The owner showed up about an hour later. He was very nice and gave us hints about visiting the volcano at night. We could hear other people talking in other rooms (all the doors were hollowcore) but didn't actually see anyone around until the next morning at breakfast, where we met the other 9 guests. A large bottle of Suave shampoo and liquid soap covered the amenities in a shared bathroom. When I travel, I avoid hostels but that is more of what this was like. For the price, I expected much better. Breakfast was 1/2 a papaya with 1/4 banana and 2 grapes, fruit juice, coffee, part of a bearclaw, a 3" square baked omelet casarole and potatoes. Not enough for any normal man but OK for us. It was served promptly at 7:30 (I'm more of an 8-9 person on vacation.) If you decide to stay here, the road in is very long and gets narrow at end. It's about 10 minutes north out of town in the jungle part of the area. I appreciated the owner mailing my jacket back to me after I left it in the room... I was surprised however, that after 6 days, he had not checked the closet in the room we had stayed in and says he didn't usually do that. Lesa meira

Just the kind of surprise B&B that makes a trip special. A large former family home turned B&B, made it comfortable and inviting. Location outside of Volcano led you into a part of island most don't see. Beautiful estate surroundings with lush green foilage. I would go back and spend a week there.

The Lodge provided a very relaxing atmosphere. There was a large common area where you sit quietly and read. Internet access if you needed to find out about the rest of the world. My niece and I spent 1 night at Halana Lodge but I wish we were there longer. When I go back to the Big Island, I will stay there again, if they have room. The lodge is nesteled in the lush forests of Volcano Village just 40min south of Hilo off Hwy 11 and just 10min from Volcanos National Park. There are 2 large living rooms, a nice size, fully stocked kitchen with a seperate dinning room and a fabulous back deck with a large bubbling hot tub. The night sky is amazing and, since it gets pretty chilly at night, the beds have heated blankets. The lodge was very clean and the inn keeper and his wife were very friendly and prepared a fantastic breakfast for us in the morning. We only stayed for one night, but would definitely go back and recommend it to others visiting the Volcano National Park area - no more than 15 mins away. Eine tolle Lodge mit der wahnsinnig netten Nancy. Sie hat morgens für uns gekocht, Ausflugstipps erteilt und Wege gezeigt. Sehr familiäre Atmopshäre. Die Lodge liegt etwas abseits des eigentlichen Dorfs (ca. 10 min). Mit allem eingerichtet was man braucht liegt man hier glücklicherweise Abseits des Tourismus. Hotellet ligger lite utanför Volcano village vilket var perfekt för oss. Hyr bil så är det absolut ingen problem. Värdinnan berättade oss allt om omgivningen och tipsade vart vi skulle åka och när bästa tiden var för t.ex. Kilauea Caldera och the Lava Glow. Ce "bed & breakfast" est difficile d'accès si on arrive après le coucher du soleil et qu'on ne connait pas le trajet. Mais l'accueil de nôtre hôte était 4 étoiles. C'est froid et humide (surtout la nuit). Il faut prévoir un polar et de bas chauds pour les soirs si on veut rester au salon (+ un coup vent pour aller au Parc de volcans le soir).

Bei Ankunft war nur Zettel an Tür, dass hintere Tür offen ist und wir anrufen sollen - durch die abgelegene Lage war dies bei oftmaligen Netztverbindungsfehler etwas mühsam. Leider war der nächste Tag ein Sonntag und wir mussten unser Frühstück selbst zubereiten, ohne vorher eine Einweisung über Lodge und Küchenequipment durch die Vermieterin bekommen […] zu haben. Sie kam dann am Morgen des 2. Tages (Montag) und bereitete ein sporadisches Frühstück für uns alle zu - bei dem Preisleistungsverhältnis eigentlich nicht tragbar! Alles in allem eine wildromantische Vulkan-Gegend, sehr abgelegene Lodge, aber leider, wenn sich Ambitionen der Vermieterin nicht ändern, nicht zu empfehlen... Lesa meira
