Westmorland Hotel – Penrith

Our second stay at the Westmorland within ten days. Wifi was non-existent anywhere in the hotel causing considerable inconvenience to guests but little action or interest from staff. Stayed in newly decorated executive room with view of fells, nice view but ghastly ultra modern furniture, just awful with very low wicker chairs below level of windows […] and metal table more suited to a garden. We enjoyed our stay at Westmorland, however were disappointed to be put in basic room when we had booked and paid for executive room. This was corrected when we complained, but it shouldn't be necessary. Hit and miss Internet connection and little interest from staff in problem. Welcome at reception after a long drive was very smooth and efficient. Room had a lovely mountain view, quiet, spacious, good size bed and all facilities you would expect. I was only there for one night, travelling up to Scotland & it was the best point in my travels to stop for the night. However I was so impressed with everything I saw, that I would actually go & stay there for a holiday! The surrounding area has much to do in & the hotel itself is really nice. It has a lovely open fire to sit by, with a wine & a book! […] The food is fantastic & the service that goes with it is faultless. And of course, the room itself; I was in a twin bed (but single room rate for b&b) room. It was warm & cosy, the temperature just right, all decked out in white, with beautiful blankets folded over the ends of the bed in lovley natural tones. The view was nice, including a magical sunset. The bathroom was spotless & had lovely new fittings.The soap there is hand made & hypoallergenic & smells divine, if you like lemongrass. They have a full range of smells in their collection & can be bought in their great farm shop if you want more to take home. I got the lemongrass hand & body wash & it's fabulous. Everything in the hotel is done in an ecologically friendly way. They have a great booklet in the room telling you loads of things about the hotel & about the surrounding areas. It really is worth reading, I found out that they have pet rooms there, where guests can bring their pets with them, which is a plus for me. They have a big complex of shops there, including their own local farm shop which does yummy foods & has all sorts of other products too. Lesa meira

Westmorland is top of our stop-over places to stay when travelling from Surrey to Fife. Rooms are clean, warm and well appointed and the beds are wonderfully comfortable with cosy feather duvets and snuggly pillows. However, this time round we were allocated a room where the 2-seater settee was against the wall, side by side with the TV, so we had to […] rearrange the furniture in order to sit in comfort to watch the box! No mean feat with little room to spare! Choice of watchable channels was also disappointing, but for just one night we weren't prepared to "complain" as there were comfort compensations. The hotel was fully booked with pre-Christmas travellers moving south-north or north-south, so general service was not as sharp as on previous visits and the room service food was late to arrive and of disappointing quality. However, the management were quick to refund this cost when we reported this to them. The adjoining farm shop has now been developed into a wonderland of local produce and crafts... a perfect place to pick up last minute gifts and souvenirs. In all, a great break in a long haul journey and well worth stopping for! Lesa meira

Lovely hotel in super location. At services on M6 but far enough away not to be disturbed by traffic noise. Friendly and helpful staff. Lovely room. Food was excellent, both dinner at night and breakfast. Fantastic views from dining room in morning. Would definitely stay there again.

Reasonable comfort and condition, although there were marks on the dining tables that could do with a little more cleaning. Staff apart from Receptionist seemed a little wooden. Overall a reasonable stay

An excellent welcome,lovely staff, superb room service and I could have my dogs with me what more could I want having travelled 350 miles to get there. The stay was to break my journey and complete it the nexy day to Scotand. It was so nice I decided to book for the following Friday on my way home to Devon. I would do it again with no hesitation.

It was disappointing to find a very limited range of TV and Radio channels available in the room....in todays age of satellite technology one would expect a full range of options......at least on a par with a normal Freeview offering.

A very comfortable hotel, in a beautiful setting. The staff were very helpful and the restaurant was excellent. We were well rested and able to enjoy the rest of our journey.

This is a gem of a hotel, although we only had one night there but will return whenever travelling on the M6. Forget Travelodge, there is no comparison. And as bonus, the shop has wonderful produce on sale. 5/5 from us

I had an excellent night in the Westmorland Hotel in a very pleasant room, complete with a coffee perculator or hot chocolate mix. The bed was comfortable and the room was quiet, the staff were friendly and helpful. I set off down the M6 in the morning feeling refreshed - which is just what I wanted.

Very pleasant stay only issue being lack of food choice, breakfast was very nice, will cook you what you like. Staff generally friendly, nice clean quiet hotel.

The room was OK, but there were cobwebs on the beams and there was no armchair in which to sit in the room, only a hard dining chair. The reception only had 1 person on it when I arrived and I had to wait for the receptionist to finish a long phone call. Breakfast was great. It was a convenient place to stay on my way further north.

Friendly staff, excellent dinner, cooked breakfast delicious with all local produce where possible, comfortable room and an excellent place to stay just off the motorway but in rural solitude, good halfway house for weary travellers.

Its a lovely place to break a journey on the M6 - the hotel is tucked away in a dip so you have no idea from the hotel that you are so close to the motorway, all you get are lovely countryside views. One of the best hotels I've ever stayed in at this price level. The hotel is well located and very comfortable with friendly and helpful staff and a very welcoming bar with an open fire. The bar meal we had was excellent. Rooms are spacious, attractive and spotlessly clean. It is very quiet given the proximity to the motorway. All of this was undone […] however when it came to breakfast which was truly awful. It is a buffet style system but the food available is not visible so you have already put an egg and mushrooms on your plate before discovering that there is no sausage or bacon. By the time this arrives the rest of your food is cold. The bacon and sausage were also very undercooked, the sausage so much so that I was afraid to disturb it in case it woke up and walked away. I am hoping that this was just a blip on the day and it wont deter us from staying again. However the breakfast experience reduces a 5 star review to just 3 stars on this occasion. . Lesa meira

Although this hotel is set off one of the motorway service station it is so much more than that. The surrounding views are beautiful, the staff are very friendly, and the room (executive room 45) was excellent. We arrived after midnight having been caught up in an accident tailback for several hours and driving through torrential rain but the night […] porter was very friendly and checked us in very efficiently. It was like a safe haven at the end of a difficult journey. Breakfast was very good. One couple with a baby turned up after breakfast was supposed to be finished but the staff just went to see what could be rustled up. In case you were worried there is no noise from the motorway. We just used the hotel as a stop off and went on to Keswick the next day (just over half an hours drive) so i can't comment on what there was to do if you stayed longer. Overall highly recommended. If you need a break on a trip to Scotland, this is the ideal spot to stop. A good breakfast (not a massive selection, but plenty to go round), but with a stupidly pretty view out to the mountains.

We stopped at the Westmoreland on our way back from Scotland and would recommend it very highly. Very comfortable rooms, superb dinner, helpful staff........all you could want from a hotel whilst in transit. Certainly not what you would expect from a hotel you would normally find on a motorway service area!!

We must have passed this by a lot of times on our travels up and down M6 but will definitely stay again now we know about it. Hotel and rooms very comfortable with fabulous food in the restaurant and not too pricey either. Staff are very friendly. My wife and I loved the Westmorland. It is centrally located between the Yorkshire Dales and the Lakes district on the M6, making it a great base for exploring. The hotel has a great atmosphere - very relaxed - and the views were great. Out our window we saw cattle, sheep, rabbits, and the clearest, most beautiful rainbow we have ever seen. The staff was friendly and helpful, the fire in the fireplace was warming, and the little bar in the lounge area was great for a nice nightcap. We found the hotel easy to access from the motorway but once there you are in a different world, peace and quiet and friendly chatty staff. The restaurant food is excellent and they use local produce whenever possible which makes a huge difference. The deluxe room was very comfortable and clean, in fact I would say cosy.I have stayed in many hotels during my lifetime and can honestly say that this was one of the best that i can remember. If i had any complaint at all it would be the price of dinner which i thought was quite expensive. I would definitely stay bed and breakfast again.

We spent a night here before exploring and camping wild in the Lake District, we want a reasonably priced hotel with a relaxed atmosphere, comfortable rooms and a great views - we got all three - rooms were lovely and modern, the hotel was lovely, staff were very helpful and it was just half hour away from where we started hiking, and right on the M6 […] - so easy to get to - but, without the noise - set back away from the motorway, we could have been in the hills.
