Please note that the free wifi is not available in the room but hotels.com saying it is (28 May 2013). The mattress was too soft.

The rooms looked promising but when it came to going to bed I felt sea sick, it was so soft every time one of us moved you felt like you had to hang on if not you would be thrown out .The bed was so uncomfortable the floor seemed a better option . Also my daughters sofa was also uncomfortable as you could feel all the metal bars through the mattress […] so all in all none of us slept. Lesa meira

Traveling from Colchester we missed it twice, not well signposted from that direction but we were told it states clearly on instructions its southbound, mentioned incase you are stupid as us. Television did not work but was quickly fixed. Hotel was nice but only a garage on site. Room was made up for children which was nice, but not enough cups for […] our party. Bar food and breakfast good. A short drive to Colchester, Castle Gardens and Museum excelent with good parking just before from which you can also walk into town.. Lesa meira

The mobile reception is poor in this hotel. Also, there is no free WiFi in the room, but hotels.com saying there is . Please be aware.

The hotel room was clean and comfortable. The recption staff were friendly and very helpful. The location was not great as there was nothing there, but as long as you have a car there is plenty to do and see. The price of the hotel reflects this. They could however, make a major improvement by providing free wifi for tablets, which is lamost universal […] in bars and coffee shops, but was not avaliable here. Lesa meira

Hotel very clean and modern. Well thought out and planned, including simple things like a night light built into the bathroom.

Very impressed with accommodation. Buffet breakfast selection needs tweaking. Beer selection could be improved. More info regarding food availability could be better advertised in rooms. This is not a criticism merely an observation.. I would definitely stay there again.

I liked my stay at the Holiday Inn Express Colchester as it was the ideal location for my first visit to Constable Country. Unfortunately it was a bit tricky to find hiding behind the petrol station off the A12. Hotel was modern and decorated well. The rooms were finished well. If you have others sharing the room like your kids beware the sofa beds! We have an 11 year old who could not sleep on the sofa bed due to the springs being so near the surface, then of course you have to cram in to a double bed! We went down to eat in the main reception area but it […] was so cold there we abandoned the idea and drove in to Colchester. The Hotel itself is actually rather nice and decent value, however the experience we had was dreadful, we were kept awake by drunken people and at one point for up to an hour all we could hear was swearing and kicking of a door. On reporting it and explaining the problem the person said let me see what we can do about that problem, he came back after […] and just said oh sorry about that. I know its difficult and not the fault of the hotel, however it certainly wasn't our fault and the experience was not one that we should have had and I would not like repeated, I believe it could and should have been dealt with much better. I would have personally thrown the guests out. They would have certainly ruined many peoples stay. Apart from that it would have been a reasonable comment. Lesa meira

Great for a mid-trip stay if you are breaking up a long journey. But has very little nearby except the shell garage that the hotel is located behind. Staff were not overly helpful - stayed as a large group (23) and they were unorganised at check in and refused to serve all of us in the restaurant even though we offered to stagger our timings - ended […] up ordering takeaway, also very little options only Thai Garden or Pizza a-go-go delivered in the area. This holiday inn express is relatively new and the standard and finish of the room is excellent...spacious, comfortable bed and a roomy clean bathroom. Two things to note is that there is no free WIFI in any of the rooms (expensive day charges) and the hotel suffers from poor mobile reception. Breakfast was more than adequate with scrambled eggs, sausages, […] beans and a choice of pastries being offered. Would not hesitate to stay in this hotel again if on business in the area. Nice clean hotel, ideally located near A12 for stopover on journey or to visit the area. Breakfast was included in our rate and was ok, but there was less choice of food than in most hotels.

Clean new and simple. Kind of high tech in the room, took a bit of figuring out how to get the lights on using the room card. Small room but certainly clean and comfortable. Expedia and the hotel wouldn't let us change the date at all and absolutely no pets allowed. Those were the only negatives. We had to ask to find out that breakfast was included, […] but all in all it was a nice stay and we were pleased. Lesa meira

After driving up and down the road, asked at Farm to be told that we had to drive through the garage forecourt.then we saw a sign for Holiday Inn Express.Other than this sign no indication exactly its location post code did'nt help.

Basic but all that was needed

Myself and two teenage daughters stayed one night while visiting the local Uni, the room was ideal, Shower great, very clean, helpful staff, but the bed was really soft. value for money though with all you can eat breakfast which was very good.

All good except location you can only get to it from one side of the A12 Northbound otherwise you have to go a long way round small villages a bit of a pain

We were extremely happy with our stay , staff very helpful and friendly. Room was very well presented and immaculately clean throughout.Kudos to the cleaning staff and maid service. The only thing which I found strange was the fact that there is no signage off the A12 hiway and I found it a little hard to find the Hotel as it is not visible until one […] drives up the ramp to the Shell station. Unfortunately the room and corridor smelt of smoke. We found out that we were near to the 'smokers' rooms. Something that we shall be aware of next time. The staff were very courteous and the breakfast provided was very good. It was very difficult to find the hotel as we didn't have sat nav!!!!

While the hotel is nice, clean with efficient staff there is nothing else close to the hotel apart from a petrol station. The evening menu is limited although the free breakfast is adequate. Will stay at another hotel in future due to the lack of local amenities

I booked two rooms, one for me, my wife and 16 year old son and the other for my in-laws. On arrival, the hotel looks new and modern. The lobby is open plan with a bar and restaurant area just past the reception. The staff were friendly and welcoming upon arrival but sometimes a little busy as they share duties with the bar as well as reception. The […] room was clean, tidy and well maintained. The bathroom was immaculate and the shower cubicle huge! And the shower was quite good too! The main bed was comfortable with a choice of soft and firm pillows. The only issue was the sofa bed for our 16 year old was very uncomfortable. You could feel the springs through the very thin mattress and he didn't have a good nights sleep. We also had to ask for extra towels, as we were only provided with one bath towel. Otherwise, an excellent stay. The breakfast was a mix of hot and cold buffett. The only thing missing was bacon and maybe a fried egg but for the price, it was all quite good and very filling. Overall, we were very plased with our stay at this Holiday Inn Express Hotel and would definitely stay again and recommend it. Lesa meira
