What to Do for Fun in Yokohama with Your Kids?

Yokohama is a popular city for families to live in, so there are plenty of kid-oriented attractions to enjoy. Head outdoors and up into the treetops for some fun in the fresh air, with parks and obstacle courses.

1. Yokohama Cosmo World

Yokohama Cosmo World is a 3D amusement park in Minato Mirai 21. Its standout attraction is Cosmo Clock 21, one of the world’s largest clock-style Ferris wheels. Standing 370 ft tall, you can enjoy a panoramic view of Yokohama during a ride that lasts about 15 minutes. 4 of the 60 gondolas have transparent walls and floors that make you feel like you’re floating in mid-air.
A must-see at Yokohama Cosmo World is Cosmo Clock 21’s impressive illuminations, on display from sunset until around midnight. Visit the Wonder Amuse Zone for scream-inducing attractions, such as the Vanish diving rollercoaster and the Cliff Drop waterslide. Burano Street Zone offers hands-on attractions, while Kids Carnival Zone has rides for small children.

BorneLund KID-O-KID is an indoor amusement park at MARK IS Minatomirai, around an 8-minute walk from Sakuragicho Station. You’ll find a ball pool, a trampoline, a large glass window for doodling and other play areas, including a garden specially designed for babies.

The Hamagin Space Science Center is within a 3-minute walk of Yokodai Station. Formerly called the Yokohama Science Center, the venue is designed to look like a massive spacecraft, housing 5 exhibition rooms. This is an interactive science center where people of all ages can enjoy learning about space and science.

Check out the Space Laboratory Room to experience the laws of physics through the movement of balls, and the Space Training Room to see its Moon Jump and Space Moving Unit attractions. Mini experiments at the space laboratory are organized as special events on weekends and holidays. There’s also a magnificent projection of stars with commentary at the planetarium.

4. NYK Hikawa Maru

Great family fun aboard a historic ship

The NYK Hikawa Maru is a passenger/cargo ship built in 1930. During World War II, it became a navy hospital and then resumed service on the Japan-Seattle line from 1953. Having made 254 journeys across the Pacific Ocean, this beautiful piece of seafaring history was retired and has been open for the public to explore since 2008.
As the only surviving liner built before the war, families will be fascinated exploring the cabins, crew areas, and dining rooms, all beautifully fitted with period decor and furnishings. The ship’s interior has a chic, regal feel which will amaze children, while out on the decks, you can relax in a deck chair and take in the beautiful coastal views.

Shikinomori Park serves as a place for relaxation, especially for families. It boasts an onsite Jabujabu Splash Pond where kids can play with water, an open space with big playground equipment, an outdoor stage for seasonal community events, a giant slide, stalls, and a visitor center.
Observation Plaza, in the southern part of the park, gets packed during cherry blossom season as it’s one of the best spots for <em>hanami </em>(cherry blossom viewing parties). There are 19 kinds of cherry blossom trees lining Sakura-no-Tani in the east of the park. In early summer, hydrangeas color the whole park. A must-see is the 16,000-ft² Iris Garden, which has 4,500 irises in full bloom.

6. Yokohama Anpanman Children’s Museum & Mall

Yokohama Anpanman Children’s Museum is an all-weather facility, with a museum on the 2nd and 3rd floors, along with shops and restaurants on the 1st floor. A giant 13-ft-tall Anpanman statue stands at the main entrance to welcome you.
An open space on the 1st floor hosts a balloon show that features characters of the Japanese picture book series the museum is named after, including Anpanmango, Dadandan, and Baikinman. Parents and kids can also take part in the museum’s many fun workshops to bring the stories to life.

7. Yokohama Doll Museum

This charming museum is guaranteed to delight children. It specializes in dolls and cuddly toys of all sizes and periods of history. The dolls come from over 100 countries and, with 4 floors to explore, a cuteness overload awaits your family. There are exhibits ranging from traditional Japanese dolls, both old and also ones created by living national treasures, to exhibits showcasing dollhouse miniatures and Sylvanian Families.
The museum also hosts regular special exhibitions and events, such as puppet shows and an adorable Stuffed Animal Zoo. On the first floor, you’ll find the CAFE Elliot Avenue for great coffee, and don’t forget to pop into the souvenir shop to grab your little ones a doll of their own.

Nissan Water Park is part of Shinyokohama Park, at Yokohama’s Nissan Stadium. There are 22 heated pools in 2 zones. The Aqua Zone has attractions like the Flow Water Pool and Water Slider, while the relaxing Bade Zone has several Jacuzzis. You can buy or rent swimwear and other necessities, so anyone can just turn up and dive in.
For little children, there’s an infant pool equipped with a geyser, which can keep the little ones entertained. You can also find a sauna, aroma room, and mist room, as well as swimming lessons and various activities for those who want to get some exercise.

Field Athletics Yokohama Tsukushino Course has 4 zones with different levels of challenge, so everyone can enjoy some outdoor exercise. The Adventure Forest of Tom Sawyer playground is really popular, as are the W Freefalls, Long Tunnel Slide, and 2 zip-lining courses. It’s a good idea to bring towels and a change of clothes.
You can also reserve an outdoor barbecue, and rent griddles and large pots for family picnics. Best of all, you can buy meat, vegetables, noodles, and drinks at the venue. Food stands are open on weekends and holidays.

10. Hara Model Railway Museum

The world’s largest collection of model trains

Japan’s first railway started in Yokohama and this lovely little museum pays homage to this. It houses what is said to be the largest collection of model trains in the world. There are miniature recreations of locomotives from all over the world, from steam trains through to the most cutting-edge high-speed electric trains.
Kids will be delighted by the vast 230-ft wide diorama, complete with miniature towns, stations, and of course, running trains. Remarkably, the model trains even use technology from real railways, with the electric trains drawing power from overhead cables, rather than onboard batteries. The museum also exhibits all manner of miniature collectables from houses and trees to model figurines, including some historic and rare ones.
