Horrible don't stay
The balcony was not been swiped or cleaned in years. there were cigarette buds out on the balcony and when you looked over to the next floor, there were beer cans and trash. Horrible. The flooring of this place is hideous. The hotel needs to be renovated and cleaned. Never staying here again and will not recommend. I know it is a hostel, but that doesn't mean it should be dirty. blood on my comforter.

Meh stay at Selina
I’ve stayed at other Selina properties in South America. I can say it was not my favorite. Everyone was kind, but it did fall short of my expectations. I think it would be beneficial for the hotel staff to be bilingual as both individuals only spoke Spanish and had to rely on the phones with guests. The hallways on the floor rooms are incredibly dark even when the sensor lights go on with motion. I had to use my phone to see the keypad for my door. The room was simple, but didn’t necessarily feel clean. There were luggage marks everywhere. There was rust all along side the bathroom doors. I did like the location and the bar/common room area does have potential. If they featured more local products, there would be better appeal. The only beer offered was Corona and a few Argentinian wines. Overall, it was an okay stay.

A lot of unique aspects I hadn't come across before in a hostel and I've stayed in hundreds. Such as privacy curtains on the non wall side of both levels of the bunk beds (although the top bed a lot harder and noisier to get down as there is nothing to hold onto when descending due to the bed's own built in ceiling and back wall). Another unique aspect, you don't get a room key or swipe card, instead your hand activates a keypad, and you type in the pin code for the room. Never come across that before, but loved it, a lot easier. The Selena Hostel also had a number of common areas on different floors. One of which is the arty looking one in the promotion photo, it actually looks even better in real life. On the negative, I accidentally put November instead of October when I booked, I immediately noticed and booked the October date. Wotif kept trying to contact the hostel on my behalf. Days later, nope keeping the money. So not very ethical in that department. They had plenty of time to sell that room. Also on the negative, after you book and pay, you get sent e-mail telling you to download some app. to check in, felt data fishing. There was some function booked for a common room on my second night, yet I was never informed about it. Now granted the music wasn't as bad as the techno or whatever most hostels put on. Was actually quite pleasant to hear what I assume are Uruguayan or at least Spanish singing music artists. Did make it a little harder to sleep.

No atmosphere whatsoever, it was quite frankly very depressing to be there. Common area like a ghost town. The state of the communal kitchen is horrendous, quite possibly one of the dirtiest kitchens encountered after 9 months in South America. It was absolutely disgusting. Selena have chosen style over substance. Wifi didn’t work most of the time. Communal area hired out to private functions on weekends so inaccessible. Tv/cinema room not working as Tv was broken. Overall a very disappointing stay. Staff were friendly though.

Not the greatest experience.
What a bizarre experience. I've been familiar with the Selina chain for a while, but this was my first time staying at one. Unfortunately this will probably be my last. Most of the amenities advertised on the Selina Montevideo website just didn't exist... There was no cocktail bar. No coffee shop. No restaurant. No hand soap anywhere. There were no activities (or if there were, no one told me). I would loved to have participated in the yoga they advertised, but there was no information about it. I even would have been willing to pay for activities, had there been any. As a digital nomad who travels with a full-time job, one of the main reasons I stayed here was the promise of a coworking space. This was the biggest disappointment. Just because a communal room happens to have tables in it, that does not mean it's a suitable place to work. Noise aside (as the "CoWork" was in the same room as the "recreation lounge"), there were no functioning power outlets and the wifi was not strong enough to make calls. The private room I stayed in was comfortable enough, but I don't think I actually slept my entire stay. The walls were so thin I could even hear when the guests across the hall showered. I will say, the staff was incredibly friendly (despite all the issues with the property/advertising; I don't believe any of this is their fault). The location right across from the beach was also nice. In conclusion, if you're looking for a place to sleep and/or work, do NOT stay here.
