I travel often and have never had an experience like this with a hotel. I booked a stay here through Expedia two months prior to our visit. Just a week and a half before our trip, Expedia emailed me that this hotel could no longer accommodate us and was cancelling our reservation. Meanwhile, I could see on all hotel booking sites that they had plenty of the same room I booked for sale for much more money than I originally booked ours.
When I called Expedia, they said there was nothing they can do so I spent lots of long-distance dollars trying to get a hold of the hotel. When I finally did get a hold of someone, they told me that they were overbooked. I let them know that I had proof and pictures that they were trying to take my room away and sell it for more money online and this was not good practice. After spending $80 on the phone to Italy, we came to an agreement that we will only stay for three of the original 6 nights and they would upgrade us to a better room with a free bottle of wine.
Once at the hotel, the room was a downgrade and there’s no bottle of wine. Even though we had already paid Expedia for the room, the hotel upon check out claimed they never received the money. I’ve dealt with Expedia many times and had never had a hotel claim this. We had to pay the hotel again even though we had already paid through Expedia. The manager assured us that he would have Expedia refund the original amount but he never did and he is not answering their calls.
