MAXXI - National Museum of 21st Century Art in Rome is an award-winning museum of contemporary art, architecture and design managed by the Italian ministry of cultural heritage. The collection encompasses 2 museums: the MAXXI Art museum and the MAXXI Architecture museum and features permanent and rotating exhibits. The permanent collection grows through direct acquisitions, commissions, competitions, awards and permanent loans.

The museum was designed by architect Zaha Hadid after she won an international design competition. Of her five submitted designs, one was chosen and today sits on the site of a former military barracks, even incorporating parts of it.
