My husband and I stayed here during the week of July 14th to 21st to celebrate our 1st wedding anniversary. Overall, we thought the property was beautiful and the staff was very accommodating. The food and drinks were very good, but we especially liked our dinner at the Italian restaurant. Our server Castillo was very kind and warm hearted. I would highly recommend the Occidental Papagayo!

This was by far our best experience with an all-inclusive. The grounds were well kept; the room was great; and the staff was amazing - always smiling and ready to help in any way they could. Almost all of them spoke english and tolerated our attempts at spanish! We can't say enough about Enrique. He made this the most memorable stay and went far beyond any expectations we had. His entire staff, but particularly Liseth, were hard working and always busy, and always happy (even while she was pregnant!). It was evident he was also a great person to work for. We will definately be returning. In fact we weren't home a week and started looking into when we could return! It was amazing - and we've traveled a bunch. Pura Vida!

Really enjoy the Occidental Papagayo resort! The majority of the staff is great, especially manager Enrique he helps me make my wife's birthday special, both times here! Other staff were so friendly and help when we need something ( Roy, and Carlos) thanks. Only wishes that next we stay here they provide local entertainment atleast once in weeks stay. And that we could have had restaurant dining 3 nights option instead of just 2 for week stay. We will be back!

I arrived at 12:30ish. Called ahead of time to ask for possible early check-in. "Yes, of-course." When I arrived, "We're sorry, check-in is at 3:00." At 2:00 I asked again if the room was ready. "Sorry, it's not ready yet." Then, conveniently at 3:00, "Sir, your room is ready!" They then take you via golf cart to your room, which is so far away from every amenity on the property. As I'm there, the cleaning staff was at the same building. I asked them if they had just finished... she replied that she cleaned it herself about 2 hours ago. I booked a "Bay view room", and the view is the top of a bunch of trees and a touch of water. Comical to say the least. SO, I would recommend booking a room that is close to the office because that is where everything is. The bay view is NOT worth the 10 minute walk in the heat and humidity to go eat or go to the pool. Also, you have the odor of B.O. around the restaurant because everyone broke a sweat walking to get there. The second day, nobody went to my room to refill the drinks in the room fridge. When I called and asked, "Someone is on their way." Nobody ever showed up. So I walked to the front desk and asked if I could get a few drinks from the market since nobody came to refill my drinks. "You have to pay for the drinks from the market." When asked if I could get the drinks from them while I was standing there, "No, we cannot." When leaving, be sure to call for the golf cart well in advance because it took him about 40 minutes.

Terrible Experience
It was a terrible experience and I would recommend this resort to anyone. The staff was rude and had an attitude. The front desk would take a long time to answer the phone. The rooms didn’t have any towels. It was hard to make reservations for dinner at two of the three onsite places to eat dinner. The resort needed more lighting outside as you are walking at night on the walking path, it was extremely dark. The resort wasn’t accommodating when wanted to cancel the last day of our hotel stay so that we could leave one day early. We enjoyed the offsite excursions and Costa Rica was beautiful.

Beautiful area of Costa Rica. The beach was great, and had plenty of seating. It is public, so just know there are vendors, but they do not bother you repeatedly. The dining was good, and we enjoyed the Asian and Italian restaurants. The lobby bar bartender was fantastic, as well as the bartenders at the swim up bar. We stayed during the rainy season, so I don’t think it was as crowded as high season. We never had a problem getting a chair at either pool. The only issue we had was housekeeping. We had zero towels in our room when we checked in, and they did not bring any until the next day even after we called twice. They also repeatedly took our towels and did not replace them with new. We had to leave a note for housekeeping to please leave towels. Other than that, we had a great trip. It was the perfect size resort for a short 5 day trip.

I really wanted to LOVE this place but there needs to be some major improvements. Let’s start with the food. I only ate at the buffet twice. Dinner theme was Caribbean ( 2nd night ) and it was so far from Caribbean food. They had snapper which I was excited for but it was sooo dry. Then I did breakfast my last morning and the selection was devastating. I also ate at the snack bar after spending most of my day in the pool so it was nothing too special but better than my dinner at the buffet. They also have selective service depending on what you’r wearing. I booked for The Grill and the food was amazing ( steak, potatoes, vegetables and bread was the best thing I’ve had ) Every other meal I had was room service and Antonio was truly amazing. The entertainment was dull. All the fun stops at 7pm unless you want to sit in the disco and hope that the dj plays something you can relate to. The transportation around the resort really needs improvement. You can either wait and pray that someone drives by you to give you a ride or have someone call and wait for pick up. I don’t recommend walking unless you’re a gym rat due to the countless hills. And depending where your building is, walking is out of the question. I did experience some rudeness by the bartender in the snack bar. And was even served last after arriving 2nd to the bar. That was the last time I went there because I know my temper. However the rest of the staff were friendly and courteous. Would I revisit.. no !!

While I truly appreciated the kindness and attentiveness of the staff, the resort needs a complete overhaul. The rooms are very large - probably the largest I have seen, but it needs updating. My sheets had some kind of black stain on them which I asked to be changed. The napkins at the buffet table were all stained. The food was subpar at best and only had one restaurant that had good food - The Italian. The snack bar had the same food every day; pizza, hotdogs, hamburgers, plain pasta, chicken wings and some salads. The pools are so old that the tiles are coming off and people Pick them up and leave them on the side of the pool. The pool by the beach with lounge chairs in the pool have not been cleaned and there is a ton of black grout lines - which just grosses me out. The resort should warn people about the all the raccoons that come to your door. I had two baby raccoons just look in the window of my room and just stare at me. Also, most of the resort does not have air conditioning. The restaurants were so hot that a waiter gave me a napkin with ice and told me to put it on my head. I had to call the front desk a few times because my room was too hot. All in all - I would not go back.

The property was nice, but little things added up to making the experience less pleasurable. Staff rarely smiled and rarely interacted with guests, the pool had excessive mildew on the tiles, posted activities such as pool aerobics and pool volleyball did not occur (I was told I had to ask for someone to do it), and the food was very average. 4 days in a row I was unable to exchange my beach towel for a new one due to none available and 2 days I was unable to order room service because no one answered the phone. ( I tried over 6 times each) If you are a premium member, the top shelf liquor is only aviable at the Premier bar which is extremely far from the pools and is limited. The bartenders were not very friendly and barely made eye contact. Nightime entertainment is limited to a disco, karoake, and sometimes a violinist. Overall, I did not feel very welcomed.

Me vendieron una habitación de luxe vista a la bahía y lo menos que se aprecia es la bahía. Robo de mis botellas y gorra del mostrador del bar de piscina. TERRIBLE
