    Holywell Bay

    The best spot for sunsets

    Holywell Bay
    • Ódýrt
    • Pör
    • Myndatökur

While the town’s main beaches are great for a bit of sun and surf, we recommend taking your sweetheart over to Holywell Bay. This large, beautiful beach with a secluded cove at one end, is tailor-made for romantic sunset walks. You can expect to see fewer people and, as it faces west, you’ll get a much better view of the sun as it passes below the horizon compared to Newquay’s northward aspect.

This part of the world is known for its golden sands divided by dramatic rocky headlands. Be sure to bring your camera and wear your best smiles for some romantic holiday photos.

    The Japanese Garden

    A green paradise

    The Japanese Garden
    • Pör
    • Myndatökur

The gorgeous, private Japanese Garden is well worth the price of admission. Take your time to stroll the many gravel paths connecting different areas, and discover ponds, a willow wood and a moss garden. Seats are scattered throughout, inviting you to pause and appreciate the lush display of plants and trees.

Carefully curated, the garden is rooted in a Japanese philosophy of finding balance between overly manicured and wildly fecund to create an aesthetically pleasing environment that soothes the soul. If you love gardening and are looking for botanical souvenirs, browse the on-site shop which stocks a diverse range, from tiny bio bubbles to bonsai trees.

    A stunning little cove

    Lusty Glaze Beach
    • Pör
    • Lúxus

With a privately owned cove, restaurant and just 2 self-catering accommodations, it would be fair to call Lusty Glaze a boutique resort. Small but perfectly formed and ideal for couples in search of alone time, it’s even possible to rent the beach for the duration of your stay and have the whole place to yourselves.

The Lusty Glaze’s restaurant is, of course, open to the public, and serves traditional thin-crust pizza and a selection of wines. The event space, when it’s not booked for weddings, holds regular music nights. Check their website for what’s on during your visit and make sure to pack your dancing shoes.

When visiting Newquay, getting tickets for the Lane Theatre is an absolute must. Home of the Newquay Amateur Dramatic Society, which has been running for almost a century, it’s a great place to catch an evening of entertainment. Parking at the theatre is free and it’s a fully accessible venue. In addition to the usual bar items, they also serve tea and coffee to keep you refreshed.

Most weeks see a mix of shows and touring productions, including world-class plays, musicals, tribute bands, comedy nights and drag performers. Nothing beats the atmosphere of a live performance, so you might be tempted to go more than once.

    The Beach Hut

    Locally sourced and sustainable diner

    The Beach Hut

    • Matgæðinga

Part of the Watergate Bay Hotel, the Beach Hut is a modern seafront eatery for laidback dining with fantastic views over the bay. It’s popular with surfers and folks walking the Cornish coast, so expect a friendly, social atmosphere and even some well-behaved dogs.

The Beach Hut has a focus on sustainability, reducing their carbon footprint and using non-toxic cleaning products. The main benefit to diners is in the locally sourced, seasonal ingredients and plenty of veggie and vegan options. We like the mussels cooked in white wine and West Country cream, but no doubt there will be something equally lovely in season when you visit.

    Porth Island

    Dramatic beauty with deep history

    Porth Island

    • Sögu

Approach from either Porth Beach or the Southwest Coast Path and cross the little footbridge to find yourself on Porth Island, also known as Trevelgue Head. This extended headland is a nature reserve looped with footpaths. It’s grassy and surrounded by cliffs. We recommend coming out when the weather is up and the sea is wild, so you can enjoy the crashing of the waves against the rocks.

The island is also an important archaeological site dating back to the Iron Age, including a history of Bronze Age and Roman settlement. Make sure you check the sign boards for more info and learn how to identify these traces of the past.
